Pat:

I asked Jimct about any promo CD single releases he has for Arrested Development's "Tennessee" and he was very gracious to provide the following information:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - TENNESSEE (DPRO-23819-RE1)
1) Ringer Mix - 3:44
2) Radio Mix - 3:34*
3) Dubb Mix - 4:40 (not 4:43 as stated on the label)

Jim put an asterisk next to the Radio Mix because he says this was the one he played at his radio station. Chances are this is the mix most mainstream Top 40 stations played as well.

Now, Jim also provided another promo CD single for "Tennessee" with some additional mixes:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - TENNESSEE (DPRO-23819)
1) The Mix - 4:33 (not 4:43 as stated on the label)
2) Remix - 4:40
3) For DJ's only - 2:15
4) Dubb Mix - 4:40 (not 4:43 as stated on the label)
5) 2 Natural - 4:19

My question for you, Pat, is how do you want the database to reflect Top 40 hits that had many different mixes released to radio. Are you looking to include mention of all of them, or just the ones that were primarily played by mainstream Top 40 stations. I can see how it could become overwhelmed to have to list and read through nine different promo CD mixes for a given song!

Todd, I generally don't think it appropriate to list instrumental or dub versions as radio simply doesn't play them. Nor are they going to play a 2:15 version of Tennessee as mentioned above so I try to elminate those types of versions from the database. In the case above, I will list 4 of the 8 different versions.

The album version of "Tennessee" runs (4:32). Jim, is "The Mix" just the LP version?

My apologies, Aaron. I don't have the LP, so I'm unable to answer your question.

For those interested, the "Ringer Mix" is an edit of the LP version. The editing starts at 3:02 of the LP version, where the chorus from 2:53 to 3:02 (approximately 9.6 seconds) is looped over and over until 3:44. The edit is right on the beat as the word "take" is being sung. The fade starts at 3:32.

The "Radio Mix" is just an edit of the "Ringer Mix" (and hence, LP version), with only one additional edit. The section from 2:05 to 2:14 is edited out, which removes the spoken part talking about playing a game of horseshoes.

Thanks to some help from Ed, here is the track listing and run time info regarding the commercial cassette single of "Tennessee":

(Chrysalis 23829)

Side A
1) Tennessee (The Mix) - 4:33 (not 4:43 as stated on the label)
2) Tennessee (For DJ's Only) - 2:15

Side B
1) Tennessee (Natural) - 4:19
2) Tennessee (Remix) - 4:40

As Ed established previously, "The Mix" is the same as the album version and in my opinion should also be considered the official hit single version, though I'd be interested to hear from anyone who thinks otherwise.

I'm not real familiar with this song, and don't recall it (or any of AD's other hits) getting much airplay up this way, but what was removed from the "DJs only" mix? When you cut out half of a 4 1/2 minute song there can't be much left!! Were they trying to come up with a rap-free version or something?

The "DJ's Only" version is more like a dub mix or bonus beats, if I remember correctly.
