Hard-core fans of Billy Ocean know that his 1984 smash,
"Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)", was also
recorded w/ slightly altered lyrics as both "African
Queen (No More Love on the Run)" and "European Queen (No
More Love on the Run)" - and while neither of those
versions were hits in the U.S., they were in other
countries. However, both versions did eventually see
release in the U.S., at least on vinyl - "African Queen"
later appeared on the B-side of the "Mystery Lady" 45
(Jive/Arista 9374) in 1985, and both versions were
included on the B-side of the commercial 12" single for
"Mystery Lady" (Jive/Arista 9373) at the same time...

So my question is this: Has either "African Queen" or
"European Queen" appeared on CD in the U.S. to date???
According to the 10th edition of Pat's book (pgs.
805-806), there have been 29 CD appearances of "Caribbean
Queen" so far, in three different forms: 15 contain the
3:40-3:41 "45 version", 2 feature the 7:55 "LP version",
and 12 have an odd extended version of the 45 running
4:03-4:06 w/ a "longer fade and additional background
vocals at the very end". At this time, there is no
notation in the 10th edition next to any of those
indicating that they may actually be the "African Queen"
or "European Queen" recordings, so I assume that none of
them are...

However, I've noticed that Pat does generously include
listings for non-hit versions of the same songs under
other artists (e.g., under Cheap Trick, all CD
appearances of their original non-hit studio version of
"I Want You to Want Me" are also included in the book,
not just the later hit version from 1979 in its live
form; also Suzanne Vega's original non-hit a cappella
version of "Tom's Diner", later a hit in 1990 for D.N.A.,
w/ instrumentation added; etc.). So if either "African
Queen" or "European Queen" has appeared on CD, I think
they should also be included in the book under "Caribbean
Queen" - w/ the proper notation added, of course. Anyone
else agree??? Could these be added to future editions,
Pat???

Of course I would add them. All I need now is the time to listen to 29 cd's to see if there is an "African Queen" or "European Queen" out there somewhere.

That's funny, Pat!

Though, vaguely along the same lines, I do think you should consider selectively including some imports where members here have verified the 45 version is available nowhere else (for example, the Billy Joel "Piano Man" CD). I do know one BSN member who told me he hasn't bought the book because it doesn't include imports.

I second that motion. I know you don't want to add every import CD out there, Pat, as we've talked about this before. But since SO MUCH of your customer base is extremely interested in seeking out single mixes/versions, I don't think it would hurt to include an occasional import where a single version is available, especially when that version isn't available in the US. Plus, you have us to help you verify that these imports have the single versions. I've found the single versions of "Every Woman in the World" and "Piano Man" (plus others) because of this chat board, but I'm sure there's more out there. Maybe you could put a note in your Foreward saying you've expanded to occasionally include imports when items of interest are available. I don't think anyone would object. Of course, you may not have the desire or time to add some imports, but I think your customer base would really find it helpful. Just a thought.

Does anybody know if the longer "instrumental" version is actually a vocal version cut slightly longer at the beginning and slightly shorter at the end?

I ask because I have a version that came from an import CD which is about 15 seconds longer than the "traditional album version" I'm used to hearing in the United States. It's also edited slightly differently as mentioned above... and my CD is digitally limited to the point of having AUDIBLE distortion.

I didn't see a listing for an 8:12 length version, so I wondered what the source of this one was.
