Although I'm pretty sure there was never a promo issued without the soft electronic percussion intro, my station always cued past this when playing it on the air. I'm sure most other stations did the same.
My reason for this post, though, is that there are two 1-track promos. One has the album version, and the other has the "Vocal Mix." I don't own the actual promo, but here is the info from an online seller:
Label: Virgin
Catalog#: DPRO-11089
Country: US
Tracks:
1. 1979 (Vocal Mix) (5:08)
I have this mix on an import CD, and it runs 5:08 on that disc. I also recall hearing it on a couple different CHR stations when the song was a current.

I have the Vocal Mix promo and it's more of a remix that is definitely different than the one you're probably used to hearing.
I have two of the same version that are from a GoldDisc and a Mobile Beat disc that are both cued in and start after the intro you described.

Yeah, I remember WFLZ in Tampa played the Vocal Mix on occasion, and my old top 40 station would spike it in, too, once in a while. It's a pretty decent remix, IMO.
