I went 45 hunting this morning and finally got to hear this for the first time, with the cold ending. Since the LP version ends with a fade, does anyone know if the cold ending is anywhere else (remixes/12" versions)? I know the 45 version is available on several CDs, so the question is mostly academic.

the version from the cd below clips the fade of the song while the 45 fades out completely.....if you do a fade edit of the last 0:02 of the song from 3:28 to 3:30 you'll effectively re-create the true 45 version......

(S) (3:30) Capitol 62996 Greatest Hits (45 version)

What's the deal with the "new mix" on the promo 12"?

The 12" version has a cold end but it's a "remix" type of ending, not the same one as on the single version.

FYI, the 45 version is mixed slightly differently from the
LP version, so it's not just the ending that's different. I hear the difference mostly in the snare drum sound.

If you listen to the long ending on the LP version, you'll
hear the guitarist play a few notes from "Purple Haze". I
always wondered if the 45 was cut short to avoid problems
with the Hendrix estate.

To "crapfromthepast"

Please note that the earliest pressings of the album had a different mix of "I Want A New Drug"; the later mix was rather close to the 45 sound.

I'm not sure (because I lost one of my album's inner sleeves) but I think one was mixed by Bob Clearmountain & the other was mixed by Larry Alexander.

Wow! I'd never heard that before! Always good to have
something new to dig around for...

I pulled out my Sports LP today, which has a gold promo stamp on the back cover. The deadwax for Side A is:

P FV 41412 AS RE2 CP2

The actual run time of "I Want A New Drug" is 4:43, and the mix exactly matches the LP version commonly found on CD. With "RE2" appearing in the matrix, that probably explains why the mix sounds the same as the CD.

It would make sense that the "New Mix" appearing on promo 12" AS 1778 (listed time of 4:43) matches my LP and all CDs with the LP version. Does anyone have an LP with the original mix that can post the deadwax info?

I think the original LP mix is this one, starting at 13:20. The opening guitar riff stays centered on this mix. It pans from left-to-right on the more common 4:43 mix and on the 45.

I don't have this mix myself.

Aha! Good find, Ron. This mix is much more agressive on the electric guitars and has a different sounding snare hit.

I just placed an order for a copy that does not have any "RE" in the deadwax, so we'll see what it sounds like when it arrives!

Let us know what you find, Aaron!

I wonder if there are any other changes between your soon-to-arrive original pressing and the RE2 reissue that you already have.

Deadwax for Side A is:

P FV 41412 A G1A CACT

This pressing certainly has the original LP mix of "I Want A New Drug." I spot checked the other songs on Side A, and the mixes are the same. The only additional thing that's noteworthy is that "Heart And Soul" runs about 0.4% slower than the RE2 pressing. This doesn't seem like much, but it was obvious when I listened that it sounded like it was slow.

Aaron, was that a collection of hits by Huey Lewis you picked up?

I'm wondering if it has that alternate mix of "The Power Of Love" that I discovered on that collection of DJ discs?

Nope, I bought the original vinyl LP of "Sports."

If I recall correctly, the alt. mix of "Power Of Love" is on the UK CD of Fore and maybe a couple other UK discs.

Bumping this up. So yesterday, I bought the LP of “Sports”, which got me to
remember this discussion pertaining to whether there was ever a Bob
Clearmountain Mix of “I Want A New Drug” as there was a claim that the
earliest pressings of “Sports”, had a different mix than later pressings that
were close to the 45 sound. I couldn’t find any evidence of this, however I
did come across this interview.

https://www.grammy.com/news/huey-lewis-40th-anniversary-of-s ports-
creating-radio-hits-interview-videos

“I couldn't get "I Want A New Drug" to groove. I mixed it three or four times
with Bob Clearmountain, who's brilliant. We just couldn't get it to where it
sounded good to me. I finally got it as best I could. The record was done.”
