Much of Lawrence Welk's '50s catalog has been absent from CD release over the years, including the Top 40 hits "Moritat (Theme from 'The Threepenny Opera')" and "The Poor People of Paris". While browsing through the most recent Heartland Music catalog, I discovered an import 2-CD Lawrence Welk compilation called Into the Fifties on the Jasmine label. To my delight, the two missing Top 40 songs are listed on this set!

Does anyone have this compilation who can tell me 1) if the songs are the original hit recordings, and 2) what the sound quality is like?

I don't own it, Paul, but I can tell you that Jasmine CDs are strictly needle drops. Jasmine is a "copyright expired" UK label. That doesn't mean it doesn't sound good... but it's not going to be from tape sources. But the good news is that, yes, surely they are the hit recordings.

Did Lawrence Welk ever do a version of La Bamba? Back in the mid-60s our local station used to use a very lush instrumental version of that as bumper/fill music. I asked one of the dj's there, but he didn't know who did it (the song was on a cart).

Could have sworn I saw it on a LW album once, but can't find it now.

An e-bay listing shows "La Bamba" on the Lawrence Welk LP Today's Great Hits (Dot 3663.)
