Some of the download services (Rhapsody in particular) have been including releases from the "Carinco AG" label which appears to be a Swiss company. A lot of Carinco's material is the typical re-sing stuff that's been floating around for decades, or live versions, but some releases are the genuine real recordings and I have to wonder how they are getting away with that. Or maybe nobody is paying attention?
Some are rather humourous. They have Bill Deal and the Rhondells tracks listed as "re-recordings" but they are the original recordings. They suspiciously have tracks by the Carpenters, Tommy James and the Shondells, Lesley Gore, sounding as if they copied them from CDs or had real masters, yet the Chiffons sounds like a tenth generation dub. (But its' NOT the Chiffons re-sings.. it's the original versions) The Carole King material sounds like the original recording (Sweet Seasons) with new instruments loaded on top to make it appear to be a re-sing? Maybe they are licensed to sell these overseas but I don't know how they can put these on Rhapsody and charge a buck a download for recordings in the US that clearly belong to other labels. Anybody else have any info on this? Is there a legal loophole in play? I have never seen CDs from this label, just downloads. |
