What's the actual time on the 45 for this song? All I have is the CD version that is an incorrect edit and neither the 45 or LP versions.

my commercial 45 issued as salsoul 2152 lists the run time as 3:55 and does indeed run that length....i have, on cd, one of the neither qualifiers from the db running 4:08....

Mine's from the Funk Classics The 80's CD, which has a similar time as your CDs. I wonder what the 45 sounds like vs. this one??

I created my own edit not too long ago. I also have Funk Classics The 80s, and I seem to recall there was an edit on the intro that doesn't match the 45 (and possibly one other edit they goofed on). The 45 version cannot be created using Funk Classics. You have to start with the LP version.

I did this many, many years go for an 80s comp I was
putting together. I don't keep notes of such things, so I
cannot tell you in print exactly where to make the cuts. I
keep it all in my head though.

I used the the original 45 as the guide, and the telephone
spoken break is a bit tricky.

I wil fix and revisit.

I recreated the 45 edit a few years ago but didn't save
edit points. I saved it as a 320 bit rate mp3 if anyone
wants to hear it to recreate it as a wav.

My file runs 3:58 and I used the LP version to recreate
the 45 version.

Sorry for the false start earlier...

I worked this one using a low quality dub as a guide for the 45. Can't
completely guarantee it was the 45, but I was told it was and it was
definitely sourced from vinyl.

The only edit I detected was during the telephone call segment, and
happens right after the smarmy guy says "You know I got this little place I
like to go to uhhh...." The 45 cuts the "uhhh" off mid-word and shifts ahead
to a drum fill. Using the online iTunes version of Skyy Line for the LP
version, this edit runs from 3:16.7 to about 3:20.65 (it's really tricky and
sounds pretty abrupt). Seems completely unnecessary too, but whatever.
Other than that one edit, it was just an early fade from about 3:40 to 3:55.

Reading the thread above led me to believe there was more than one edit,
so I'm questioning whether my guide was truly the 45 (but like i said, it was
taken from vinyl somewhere and runs the correct length, so i'm fairly
confident it's correct). Is that really the only edit?

Also, my guide cuts off the first 2 guitar notes from the LP version. I think
that may just be a case of me having a crappy dub though. Were the first 2
guitar notes missing from the 45?

Hi JL....
i just played a disc dub of the 45 and it matched your
description perfectly. To answer your Q, no the 45 does
not cut off the first 2 guitar notes. The vocals start at
:24 in both cases.

That one edit is very bizarre. It actually doesn't sound
abrupt unless you are looking for it. But I am baffled
as to WHY they felt it needed the 4 second cut. All that
does is remove the words "it's kind of dark and quiet".
??? But there it is.

JL,

Glad you brought this thread back. Looks like I need to
redo the recreation. I didn't make the cut in the right
place or just faded the song early. Something I did
incorrectly which I can correct right now. :)

I was wondering the same thing. A 4 second edit does
nothing for time so maybe it was content? This song was pretty risqué
for 1982 and perhaps they thought the description of this cat's secret
lovenest as dark and quiet was just a bit too creepy for radio at that
time. Not a lot of subtlety in these lyrics.

Such an odd place for an edit.

Bumping this one back up. I have several versions from
various sources and none of them are the true 45 edit. The
version on the re-issues of Skyyline (track 10) don't
appear to be the original US edit. Does anyone know if the
true 45 version has made it to any cd compilation(s)? Or
can someone shoot over a dub so I can re-create it myself?
Thanks.

To which reissue are you referring, Rick? I have the 1993
Japanese reissue (Octave 5037), and the 'Original Single
Version' of "Call Me" (track 11) sounds like the actual 45
version to me, although I have not done a close comparison.

I have the UK (2012) reissue -     Big Break Records – CDBBR
0136 . The edit is track 10. I bet it is a UK edit of
Call Me.    I'll have to look into the Japan release.
Thanks for the info
