Two different promo 45s here: The first, the common listed and actual (4:05) version (1710-MF-A-66945-15A); then the second, which states "Special Reservice For New Edit". Listed and actual time is (4:07). (1710-MF-A-66945-RE1). I noticed there are 2 or 3 different times where it sounds like an loud atomic bomb is being dropped, all during the last 30 or so seconds of this mix - definitely much busier during the final, approx. 1:00 instrumental ending. I noticed Pat lists 3 "neither the 45 nor LP version" entries for versions in this (4:07)-ish range. If I were a betting man, I might bet that those CDs include this 2nd-issued-promo-45 version, with the "nukes" near the end.

Jim, I just checked my Definitive Collection CD, and your description matches what I am hearing. Essentially, the version on this disc is the commercial 45 version, except there is an edit at (3:29) which jumps to a different section of the guitar solo. The guitar solo ends at (3:50) and then there's the "atomic bomb" sound effects right before the fade out.
When we discussed this in another thread some time ago, we thought Motown had goofed because they also made a mistake on "All Night Long." There is an edit that is messed up on the intro at (0:13), as far as I can tell.

You know, I just revisited "All Night Long," and it appears that the horn bridge in the middle is different on Definitive Collection, too, at (2:46). Unless there was another edit of this one, too, "All Night Long" deserves a "neither the 45 or LP version" comment.

Very interesting new info here... So does this mean then that the commercial 45 version of "Running with the Night" has never appeared on CD?
Jim, if you or anyone on this board would like me to e-mail an mp3 of the version on the Definitive Collection CD to compare to the special DJ 45 edit and verify if the two are indeed identical, let me know.

Even before I started this thread, my belief was that the commercial 45 version had never appeared on CD. I still think that is the case.

Grant, re-creating the commercial 45 version for "Running With The Night" is simple.
1) Take the version from Definitive Collection and the full length LP version to start.
2) Where Definitive makes an edit at (3:30), tack on the audio from the LP version that was edited out. (In other words, there is no edit on the commercial version in that spot.)
3) Fade the remaining audio to (4:05).

When the subject was broached awhile back, I tried doing that with the LP version (making the one edit in the right spot and then fading). The resulting mix sounded a little hot to me.
Are the 45 and LP the same mix?

Yes, they are the same mix; however, due to differences in mastering, you may have to tinker with the volume levels and EQ to match them up.

Right. That's something i'm not in the mood to deal with these days. I'll just needle drop the 45 and be done with it.

Whichever is easiest for you. I believe the 45 only has two (maybe three) edits total, so even starting with the LP version shouldn't be too difficult.

I just listened to Jim's "Special Reservice for New Edit" DJ 45 of "Running with the Night" and, sure enough, it is identical to the version appearing on the Lionel Richie Definitive Collection CD! Looks like Pat has already covered this information in the database.
Thanks, Jim, for uncovering the origin of this version for us!

So just to clarify it is now November 2021 and the 45 version still has not made any Lionel Richie comps or various artists comps? Unbelievable.
I don't ever remember hearing that promo 45 DJ edit on the radio. I am taking it the 45 is the hit version or is it the Special Reservice for New Edit DJ 45?
