In 1986, Bob Seger released a handful of promo 12" singles that have extended versions on them, all taken from the Like A Rock album. They are "American Storm," "Miami," and "It's You." After comparing these versions to the LP versions, they are identical to the LP mixes but unedited. It appears that for the album, these longer mixes were edited down.

"American Storm" (Extended Version)
listed 4:36; actual 4:35

The LP version runs 4:15, but interestingly there is a 12-second segment in the LP that was edited out of the "Extended Version." Additionally, the "Extended Version" has an additional 30 seconds of instrumental music not heard on the LP and comes to a cold ending rather than fading out. If the unique segment found on the LP version wasn't edited out of the Extended Version, the full take would run 4:48.

"It's You" (Extended Remix)
listed 4:47; actual 4:50

While there wasn't an extended version of "Like A Rock" (the LP version is already 5:53), "It's You" was released on a promo 12" that included the "Extended Remix." Although the label calls it a remix, there are no mix differences between this and the 4:00 LP version. It simply runs 50 seconds longer beyond where the LP version fades out. The stock and promo 45s have printed times of 4:00 but actually run 4:03, running a few seconds longer on the fade than the Like A Rock CD.

"Miami" (Extended Version)
listed 5:10; actual 5:11

"Miami" is also mostly the same mix as the LP version (which runs 4:39) but with one difference. The "Extended Version" has the sax solo overdubbed onto the intro. This sax solo is heard toward the end of the LP version, but I don't know if the performance on the intro is the same one or a nearly identical one. I can say that the other instrumentation on the intro matches the LP intro exactly, so the sax is simply overdubbed. In addition, the "Extended Version" has a 31-second instrumental segment that was edited out of the LP version. Both versions end cold. Finally, it's worth noting that the "Single Version" of "Miami" was edited down from the "Extended Version" and also has the added sax on the intro.

"The Aftermath" (12" Remix) (B-SIDE ONLY)
listed & actual 3:35

Finally, this one actually is remixed...barely. "The Aftermath" (12" Remix) appears on a promo 12" as well as the B-side to the stock 45 of "It's You." The biggest difference is that the remix plays out to a cold ending, while the LP version fades out to the 3:29 mark. There are also some very subtle mix differences, like a couple minor percussion instruments panned slightly differently. If you aren't listening very closely, though, these mix differences are pretty tough to spot.

Thank you for this info, Aaron! I had no idea about these
alternate versions. Would love to hear them!
