In the database, the various artists CD Harley-Davidson Ride
is listed as having the 45 version plus 14 seconds. A local bar has
this CD on the jukebox, and I've played "Jet Airliner," but it seems to
be missing the opening drumbeats. I can't tell for sure, because this
jukebox fades in quickly at the beginning of any track it plays.
Could someone who has this CD check to see if the drumbeats are
there? If not, then the true 45 version (with the drumbeats but
without the "Threshold" sound effects overlapping) has yet to appear
on domestic CD.

The version on "Harley Davidson Ride" does not include the opening drumbeats so you are correct in that the true 45 version has yet to appear on cd in the US.

Rather than starting a new thread, I wanted to put some info about "Abracadabra" here...
If my memory is correct, the 45 version is merely an early fade of the LP version. If that is true, than the database should probably state "45 length" and "LP length."
Can anyone confirm?

I had thought there were pitch issues as well--I believe the 45 pitch is slightly faster.
I know people will disagree, but I don't consider the LP ending to be merely just an extension of the 45 ending. The LP ending includes some instrumental passages that kinda come out from nowhere. So I don't have a problem with the "version" designation. Again, your mileage may vary.

i believe the 45 version is the same as the cd/lp version except for the below differences
front edit the first 0:02
and
fade out to 3:20
and you'll have the 45 version.........
that's the way i see it

Ed, the song we were discussing was "Abracadabra" but are you saying that your 45 of "Jet Airliner" is missing the opening drum hits? According to Paul & the database, there are drum hits on the 45, but without the sound effects from the preceding track on the LP.

I'd say it's more than a slight pitch difference on Abracadabra. The single is sped up a couple percentage points at least.

I just listened last night to my 45 dub of "Airliner"
for the 1st time in a year or so. And while you can
edit the LP version to match time, a lyric issue in
the last verse is where the edit falls short.
On the LP Steve sings:
That I don't want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin' down in the city!
The 45 replaces the bad word with kicks.
Maybe one day we will get an actual 45 dub on some CD
anthology, but I doubt it. One of the few songs where
there is not much hope for the clean 45.
I understand some versions on CD may have the words
interchanged, but have but have personally ever heard
it.

The clean 45 version is on Greatest Hits 1974-1978, so it's easily found
on CD. The issue with the CD version vs. the actual 45, though, is that
it's missing the two opening kick drum beats and runs longer than the
45. A long time ago, I tacked the opening beats onto the CD version
and matched the fade.

Actually the word "funky" is also resung to facilitate the replacing of the s word with "kicks." It may be that the whole line is resung, but that I'm not as sure of.

The proper 45 fade starts at 3:10 on "carry me to my home"
and ends at 3:20 on the word alone in "I'll be alone."

I believe that final lyric is "Cause it's there that I belong."

Then, the fade ends just after the word belong.

I wanted to mention; I'm not sure if the correct 45 version ever showed up on CD, but I was able to strip out the opening kick drum beats from the "Greatest Hits 1974-1978" CD version using one of the online extraction tools, and it worked beautifully...no artifacts at all and the two beats just spliced right back onto the intro flawlessly.

Ok, here’s one for the class. Was the LP version (but with the clean lyric
replacing the s word) issued as a promo, or did any radio station wanting to
play the LP version have to do their own creative editing?

I'd like to know the answer to that one as well.
