"Just Be Good to Me" by the S.O.S. Band missed the top 40 in 1983, but it's still a classic of that era to me. Can anyone confirm if there was a shorter radio edit than the 5:37 single version? If so, what was the timing? Thanks!

It seems that the US commercial 45 and the US promo 45 both include the version labeled as 5:37. I haven't confirmed with vinyl, though. I don't know if there was a later "reservice" promo 45 or not.
There was a UK promo 45 version that was labeled as 3:56. I don't know the actual running time.
I have a version from Aaron that runs 4:27. It's labeled "promo 45 version", but I don't know if that was a US reservice promo 45 that's not listed in discogs, or the UK promo 45.

It's been a while since I created the edit, but most likely this is from a
DJ re-service promo 45. It was very rare that I worked on any UK 45
versions, and if I did, I labeled the file as such. I'll locate my source and
provide details asap.

Here's an update on this one. Promo 45 copies state the run time as 5:37 on both sides--neither one specifying a "long" or "short" on the label. One side, however, actually plays 4:27. The deadwax is:
Short side: ZS4-03955-3AA
Long side: ZS4-03955-3BA

One more update: The short 4:27 version is an early fade of the 5:43 (actual) version. I haven't timed a commercial single, but I presume it also runs 5:43, even though the label says 5:37.

Never noticed that before. Thanks for the info.
This must have been a hit in New England much earlier
than in other parts of the country. My Whitburn book
shows it debuting on 8/27/83, but ISTR playing it around
June-July, definitely not in the autumn. I wonder if
that might account for its relatively low chart position.

I can always count on this board to solve mysteries!
The version that played on Z100 in NY back in the 80's
was shorter than the 45 I owned at the time. I just
figured they faded it early as 5:43 for a single version
is long for radio. Now I see the promo 45 did have the
shorter version but just not labeled. Does anyone have
that promo? I'd like to know exactly where the fade
starts and ends so I can recreate. Thanks.

I was recently hunting out shorter versions of this song.
I ended up buying this collection from the UK:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-100-Hits-Party-Anthems/relea
se/11349947
It runs 4:04 on this CD. This kind of makes me wonder if this is the UK
promo that @crapfromthepast referenced back in 2017 (post 2). That 3:56
time seems to come the closest. I don't have any of the 45s (UK or US) to
compare it to.
Edit: Argh! Link issues. It's "100 Hits Party Anthems (2016, CD)" on
Discogs.

Looks like The 100 Hits Party Anthems cd
has some good songs. I've found more often than not
that I purchase one of these compilation discs and am
disappointed to find the version I am seeking is not
included.

Nite flite vol 3 1990 compilation from the UK also
includes the 3:57 version. The 5:41 7" version is
included in the Tabu Anthology Box set from the UK which I
strongly recommend.
