I've had this song on a number of CDs for a while now, and I remember that on his Greatest Hits CD, the song is fairly dry compared to the other places that contain slightly more reverb (echo). Anyone know how the original single was? Was the reverb added on these later CDs? The Greatest Hits CD I would assume used the same tape as the LP master, but of course that LP could have been different from the single too. thanks.

The original single does not have the reverb you mention. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the original album, either mono or stereo, so I cannot answer whether this reverb is an artifact of the vinyl LP or not.

I have the S&P CD reissue of "Johnny Horton Makes History" and it does not have the reverb either.

checked out the vinyl LP's "Johnny Horton Makes History"(Columbia CL 1478, 1960) and "Johnny Horton's Greatest Hits"(Columbia CL 1596, 1962)... on both LP's the version of "Battle" are mono and the have the non-reverb vocals... it also seems that the speed of the stereo version is slightly slower pitched...

Jrjr that covers the mono LP situation, what about the stereo original LP situation?

By the way do you have the mono LP version of "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks to help resolve a similar situation discussed in another thread?

my commercial 45 for the johnny horton song 'the battle of
new orleans' issued as columbia 41339 does not list a run
time on the label but runs 2:34...this would make the 45
version 0:03 LONGER than the longest db entry
(2:31)...this 45 run time info s/b noted in the db...

The Stereo has reverb on it on Greatest Hits (at least the
6 Eye Stereo original I own)

I have just obtained a 2nd pressing of the album "Johnny Horton Makes History" and like the mono LP there is no additional reverb on The Battle Of New Orleans.

Just checking if this ever made CD in mono, even overseas.

I don't believe it has. Surprisingly, there hasn't been a complete mono Johnny Horton singles package compiled a'la Real Gone Music.

For those who may not have known, there's also
a British version of this song as well with
some different lyrics. Don't know if it's ever
been on CD or Digital, though.
