my promo cd single for the primitive radio gods song "standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand" issued as columbia csk 7752 contains the below tracks...
1-edit (4:35 listed; 4:32 actual)
2-album version (5:39 listed; 5:37 actual)
this promo cd single info s/b added to the db.....

Was the edit simply an early fade of the album version? Given the repetitive nature of the song it's kind of hard to tell.

Thirteen years later...
The "Edit" is indeed an early fade of the "Album Version", faded from 4:25 to 4:33, plus or minus a second.
Both the "Edit" and the "Album Version" on the promo CD single include the 8-second coin-sound intro.
Interestingly, both Top Hits USA (on T0330 and RH037) and TM Century (track no. 00015333) include the Edit, but delete the 8-second coin-sound intro.
I don't recall hearing the coin-sound intro on the air back in 1996, but I can't say for sure, 28 years later.
