Here's another one for the class.

When I started trying to make homemade edits about a year ago, one of the first ones I attempted was Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald." And I created a pretty seamless edit, however, I'm not sure whether or not I put the edit in the right place. I do know the edit occurs somewhere in the longer instrumental passage (which starts at about (4:45) of the LP version)--at least, I think it does. Anyone able to shed some light?

I have a TM Century edit in my collection. I cannot say if it's correct or not, because my actual 45 is packed away in Michigan.

The 45 edit for the song is at approximately the 4:43 mark; just
cut out the instrumental break from 4:43 to 4:59. Then hack off the
end of the track from 5:56 on (before the instrumental riff repeats),
and put in a gradual-to-steep fade from 5:45 to the end.

Thanks, Paul. I'll give it a go later this week and see how I do.

Turns out that I have a 45 single. It's also in nice condition (only been played 4 times on audiophile gear). I can dub that 45.

Although not noted in the database, an earlier promo 45 was issued for "Wreck" that contains the 5:57 commercial 45 version (stereo/mono). In the runout groove of the mono side, it reads "RPS-1369 TCN-0135-DJ LW1".

The shorter 5:23 edit is designated by "RE1" in the runout groove. Also, the record label indicates "RE1" on the mono side and "RE1S" on the stereo side.

To Aaron:

What is the difference between the 5:23 & the 5:57 versions?

Andy, there are several additional edits in the 5:23 version. Mainly, all of the instrumental sections (except the intro) have been shortened. For instance, one bar of music has been edited out between each of the lines in the first verse. It appears that they kept all of the verses/lyrics intact, though, and only edited out instrumental passages to get it to an actual 5:22.

To Aaron:

Wow. I don't think I've ever heard it. Does anyone have a dub of the short promo handy (or a recreation)?

Maybe I'm going crazy, but I hear an extra drum hit in the DJ edit after the 4:43 cut. On this video it seems like the instrumental after the cut begins with three drumbeats. (It's almost like the last 3 drum hits before the edit are repeated and then the instrumental starts). When I use the instructions above all I get is 2 drumbeats where on the video it sounds like 3 to me and can't be made with the simple edit above. Am I wrong (I've been wrong before!)

The YouTube video sounds to me like the correct single version. If you put your edit at 4:43, you're probably about a second too early. I'm pretty sure the edit point is on the first beat of the instrumental passage, just after the drum fill.

The Rhino Digital 45 of this song with the 45 version is available on Qobuz in flac format.

The DJ edit was creatively done. I ended up purchasing
what turned out to be a cracklefest promo 45 several
years ago but was able to recreate it.

If you take the .flac 45 version and recreate it then no
doubt it will sound amazing.

This thread inspired me to try my own radio edit, with
the goal of making a 5 minute version without dropping
any lyrics. I took an approach similar to the 5:23
version. There are several places where there's a
measure of instrumental between the lines of lyrics in
the verses. Those can all come out, and then the
instrumental breaks can be shortened. I think the
trick to making it work is to avoid using hard cuts.
All of my edits are crossfades created in multitrack.
A lot of the edits would've been impossible to pull
off with hard cuts. Once all the editing was done the
running time was about 5:05. The oldies station I do
production for (KISN) hasn't been playing the song
until now, just because it's so long and dreary. I
know a lot of stations played the full commercial
version as a current and it was a big hit, but I can't
help thinking 6+ minutes of it might be a bit of a
tuneout today.
