Anyone know how to recreate the 2:58 DJ edit for Green-Eyed Lady?

Funny, I never heard this edit during the song's chart run...every station around here (including the one where I was a weekender) played the 3:33 version back in the autumn of 1970. Dunno if the short version was only selectively serviced, or what. First time I heard the edit I thought it was a station edit.

I know there were 2 different stock singles of this, the aforementioned 3:33, and one with a listed time of 5:58 that was essentially the album version faded early.

Thanks to Steve, I was able to hear a recreation of the DJ edit. You'll need a section of the LP version to complete the DJ edit, as the needed instrumental section isn't in the 45 version.

Thanks, Steve!

I was wondering if it was close to what Dick Bartley has used in the past.
It essentially plays the 45 version then ends with the LP version close.
Maybe it was Bartley's own creation.

Not sure what Bartley uses, but the short promo version had different edits in the intro and bridge than the stock. I don't remember it having a cold ending like the album did.

Three DJ 45s were issued, I'm not sure of the order except that the 3:33 was the last one issued. There was the 5:58 version which is an early fade of the LP version. There is the 2:58 version. Then the 3:33 version. That may have been the order released, the longest first, the 2:58 edit second, and finally the 3:33 version.

The 3:33 version sounds like somebody took the 2:58 version, took some of the music out of the the middle but spliced organ/guitar solo back in. This would explain the level change which happens at the splice before the instrumental break, AND the early splice back after the instrumental break, it's a beat early. There is no reason for that last edit, it was obviously a mistake as they spliced back in to the ending of the 2:58 edit, they probably figured it was "close enough" or didn't notice or care.

The 3:33 version often sounded a little out of phase when played in mono, probably from the splicing back in process.

Bill, are you absolutely certain that 1970 US Liberty 56183 stock and
promo 45s did exist with a length of (5:58)?

I have been able to confirm the existence of the other two US promo 45
lengths you specify, (2:58) and (3:33). But never a (5:58) US promo 45. Of
course, this doesn't mean one didn't exist. I just can't yet confirm it.

And every single US stock copy that I have ever owned or seen has always
had a listed time of (3:33). I've never found a single US (5:58) stock copy.
And I've been looking for one for years now.

Yesterday, I was able to buy a (5:58) stock 45 copy on eBay. However, it
was a Canadian copy. In fact, the listing said "Canada-only (5:58) 45
length." Now just because a merchant says something, that doesn't make
it true. But his statement does also match my own experience.

Bill, I consider you to be one of the very top authorities here on Pat's
board. Do you happen to own actual US stock/promo (5:58) copies for
"Green-Eyed Lady", or are you going from memory on it? Just curious.

I can't remember now if it was stock or the promo but I think I sent it to Pat Downey, it was on his "want list" at the time. Pat?

I'm not Bill, but I have a stock 5:58 copy that's a U.S.
Liberty release. I can send you a label scan if you'd
like.

No, Steve, that's fine. I believe you. Now I guess the only remaining question
is does anyone own an actual US promo 45 that runs (5:58)?

Thank you for bringing this up, as I have never to my memory ever heard that promo edit and wonder how it differs, at what point, form the 3:33 hit single edit that we all know and love so well...one of the posters mentioned the middle inmstrumental part otherwise on LP and the 5:58 version only, but what part? I've HEARD the nearly 7 minute long version and there are five edits in the instrumental part, the major one being in the uptempo part of the instrumental organ solo that was spliced into the 3:33 length single which also lacked the immediate post-vocal stop and start and repeat note parts (and the stock 45 also has a shorter segue lead in back to the chorus than the 5:58/6:50 verisons.;)

Still don't know what was removed exactly from the under-3 minute DJ promo or it's aviable to hear (like on YouTube).

I was sent a dub of the promo edit back in 2011. I never
really was a fan of the way it was edited on the promo 45
so I ended up deleting the file I created. I ended up
going with the 3:33 commercial 45 version as my go to copy
of the song.

I got the file from Hykker (if he doesn't mind my revealing that it was him) here and it basically even FURTHER cuts the instrumental break then the single but in such a way that it leaves the second stop start early in the break as heard on the 6:50 album & 5:58 early, discontinued single, then it builds up to the fast organ break heard on all other versions (but edited near the end in the hit single) but then goes back to the slow down that goes back into the "Green Eyed Lady" part. I mistakenly thought, as I emailed Hykker back, that the promo edit faded early but checking, it's the same fade, so just two cuts, slightly leaving a brief part as mentioned as heard on the 5:58 and LP 6:50 lengths and only missing on the 3:33 length hit single. Otherwise this DJ and the hit ones (intro, the intact lyrics) are the same. :)   [only several times years ago heard this, though I've heard for MANY times on radio the same year (1970)'s "Are You Ready" DJ edit by PG&E, which is a DRASTICALLY changed edit. ;)]

Someone sent me the radio 2:58 edit years ago.
Forget from whom.(had not joined this forum yet)
Pretty bad edit, honestly.
Can see why they replaced it with commercial 45 edit.
Have also never seen the 5:58 promo copy either.

Discogs has a pretty exhaustive listing or the song. No evidence of a 5:58 promo. But, radio was serviced a 2:58 / 6:49 DJ copy which I just saw on Discogs.
