I have the commercial 45 for this song, Wing 867518 (printed 4:04, actual 4:16). It's got a designation as "Edit", and here are instructions for creating the Edit from the LP version (timing taken from PolyTel Canada's Big Hits '91, which I suspect is a digital clone of The Comfort Zone):
Keep the first 161 beats from 0:00.0-1:27.5.
Edit on snare.
Remove the 16 beats from 1:27.5-1:35.8.
Keep the 111 beats from 1:35.8-2:33.6.
Edit on downbeat.
Remove the 16 beats from 2:33.6-2:41.9.
Keep the 49 beats from 2:41.9-3:07.4. The last beat is an orchestra hit - keep that.
Repeat the orchestral hit a second time, keeping 3:06.9-3:07.4. That's a single beat.
Repeat the orchestral hit a THIRD time, this time as the first beat in the next segment. (You will have added two full beats to the mix, both of them orchestra hits. The "Edit" has three orchestral hits in a row - the LP has only one.) Beginning with the downbeat on the orchestral hit, keep the 127 beats from 3:06.9-4:13.0.
Edit on snare.
Remove the 16 beats from 4:13.0-4:21.3.
Keep 4:21.3-4:41.5 (end).
Your mixdown will run 4:16, with edits at 1:26.9, 2:25.8, 2:50.3, 2:51.3 and 3:57.4.
