There were reputedly two different mixes of this popular
LP cut, but I can't find an alternate release.
Does anyone know the true story and can show me examples of any differences (if there are really two different versions)?
Thanks!
Andy

An alternate sax solo was introduced at some point. If
you know one solo, you'll recognize the distinction
right away.
I'd be curious if anyone knows the story. Did the new
one surface on the 1985 Greatest Hits package?

That's also what I've been told. But
I can only find one version. Maybe
some one can point me to some samples
for differences?

Listen around 3:20 to hear the difference.
The Turnstiles solo starts with a few syncopated notes
Turnstiles
Version
The Greatest Hits version starts with a faster run.
Greatest Hits
version
There are also some clear differences in the coda. At
5:21, after "Cause I'm in", there's a sax fill on
Turnstiles but no sax on GH.
I did some reading on this earlier, and there may even
be a third studio version. Between Wikipedia, StevE
Hoffman boards, and Billy Joel fan boards, there's no
clear agreement on the facts but it may be on the quad
LP release. That said, it's still not clear to me as
to why they replaced the original solo.

Thank you Eric!
Thanks to your samples, I found out what my problem was!
I own the 'Greatest Hits' CD & Vinyl; plus I own the 'Turnstiles' CD.
The issue is that I own the 1998 REMASTER of 'Turnstiles'.
The 1998 remaster I have is replaced with the 'Greatest Hits' version!!
I hate when reissued CDs quietly swap-out versions. In my world it's revisionist history...
Thanks again, Eric

I'd never listened closely to both versions until now and you're correct about the two different versions/mixes. Great catch Andy and Eric.

Is the original Turnstiles version available through a
Japanese pressing or import version perhaps?

My CD of Turnstiles must not be the 1998 remaster because it has the original mix/version (Columbia 33848).

There is a Japanese Billy Joel
compilation released in 1988 titled
Starbox which contains the
original version of "New York State
of Mind".

I had the original mix on the MFSL vinyl editon of
"Turnstiles". Never stumbled upon a CD with it, though I
haven't really been actively seeking it.

It doesn't need to be an import, the original 1987 US pressing has it, which is easily recognizable because it has the old "Compact Disc Digital Audio" logo in the lower right-hand corner on the front cover. The remaster does not have that logo on the cover.
There are numerous copies available on Discogs for around two bucks apiece.

It was also on the MoFi SACD remaster from a few years ago, but that goes for substantially more:
