This is probably not worthy of its own thread, but...
I found a very old commercially-available compilation called The Heart Of Soul (Columbia CKX 44382, 1988). Nine tracks, all pop hits.
The track listing looked familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I noticed that all nine tracks are on Realm's Gold And Platinum Vol. 4 (Realm 1CD 7826, 1988). Tracks 11-19 on G&P correspond to tracks 1-9 on The Heart Of Soul, in order. I checked Pat's book, and it looks like tracks 1-10 of G&P are on a compilation I don't have called The Heart Of Rock.
In order to cram 19 tracks on G&P, they had to fade early on a few tracks and edit some other(s). It appears that G&P used The Heart Of Soul as its digital source for everything, with some modifications as follows:
11. Michael Jackson With Siedah Garrett / I Just Can't Stop Loving You (1.2 dB quieter than The Heart Of Soul; includes spoken intro)
12. Gregory Abbott / Shake You Down (1.2 quieter)
13. Jets / You Got It All (1.2 dB quieter than The Heart Of Soul until early fade starting at 3:27; The Heart Of Soul has proper length)
14. Kenny G / Don't Make Me Wait For Love (1.2 dB quieter than The Heart Of Soul until early fade starting at 3:29; The Heart Of Soul has proper length)
15. Bruce Willis / Respect Yourself (1.2 dB quieter; missing opening drum beat on both discs)
16. Robert Cray Band / Smoking Gun (digitally identical)
17. Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam / Lost In Emotion (0.4 dB louder than The Heart Of Soul until an edit at 3:21 that removes 80 beats of the song; The Heart Of Soul is unedited)
18. Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine / Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (0.4 dB louder than The Heart Of Soul)
19. Beastie Boys / (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) (1 dB louder than The Heart Of Soul; includes "Yeah!")
So the source of the early fades and edit(s) is Gold & Platinum Vol. 4. There are 6 G&P volumes total, and the early volumes include several early fades, unfortunately. Too bad, actually; the G&P's were the first pop compilations I ever saw on CD.

The version on my copy of G&P V4 sounds different than the version I remember on the radio. The vocal take sounds different.

The 1996 edition of Pat's book gives a "neither 45 or LP" designation.
I seem to remember some Kenny G song had two versions with two different vocalists. Was that this song? I don't remember what I heard on the radio back then...

Ron, are you saying that the opening drum beat is missing
on The Heart Of Soul? I have that compilation and
it does have the opening drum beat.

My copy is missing the opening drum beat, just like the Realm disc.

Ok, I see what you're saying now Ron. I have both Discs
and they both have the FIRST drum beat missing. I misunderstood and thought
you meant that the drums were missing entirely from the
discs. My bad on that one.

I remember hearing about that too, but I can't remember what specific song it was. "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" was
originally released as a single in 1986 but didn't do much chart-wise. Then it was re-released the next year and became a
hit. There were separate 45's for each years' releases, so is it possible that the '86 and '87 releases have different
vocals/different singers? Lenny Williams isn't credited on the '86 45 but is on the '87 45.
For what it's worth, I looked on Wikipedia and didn't find any information on the song being
recorded by more than one artist or different vocal takes, so it may be a totally different song we're thinking about.

I don't recall any Kenny G hit released with different lead
vocalists, but there definitely is more than one version of
"Don't Make Me Wait For Love" out there. This song was a
favorite of mine when it was a current and I taped it off
the radio at the time (from AT40) and listened to it for
years. A few years later, I bought the Gold And
Platinum Vol. 4 CD and was disappointed at hearing this
alternate version. As I recall, it's a different vocal
take and it feels like there is less emphasis on Kenny G's
sax parts. I thought maybe this was a version used on a
Lenny Williams solo album or something, but I can't find
any evidence of that.

I'm pretty sure it was always Lenny Williams on vocals,
however, the mix was dramatically different, a lot more
Kenny G sax fills on the remixed/edited version, and
different takes on parts(?) of Lenny's vocals.

I have all 6 of G&P collections on album and CD. Aside from the Eric Records Hard To Find series, these were ones I got from Columbia House. I never really noticed much of the early fades or edits. The one I really remember out of all of them was "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey.

Not sure if G&P used an early fade for Separate Ways. I thought that one was the actual single version.

"Separate Ways" is the actual 45 edit, but it sounds like mud on G&P.
It sounds better on Priority's Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 3 Arena Rock (1992), but it's mastered too loud and clips a bit. And even then, it's only on the first pressing of that disc, because Priority lost the rights to the Journey tracks.

Gold & Platinum Vol. 4 apparently wasn't the only
one in the series that was released under a different
name. When I saw the track listing for Vol. 3, I thought
it looked familiar, then I realized it was also released
under the title Mega Hits 86 I had the Cassette of
it and used to play it alot back then. The difference
between the two is that Mega Hits has 10 tracks
whereas Gold & Platinum Vol. 3 has 12.
The two extra songs appearing on G&P 3 are The
Hooters'"And We Danced" and The Bangles' "If She Knew
What She Wants". Also, the tracks on G&P 3 are not in the
same order as Mega Hits. And looking on Discogs, it
appears that Mega Hits was not released on CD under that
name, unlike how G&P 4 was also released on CD under
The Heart Of Rock and The Heart Of Soul
titles.
