Just wanted to note that Bryan Adams' "Heaven" fades out :07 sooner on the Like, Omigod! The '80$ Pop Culture Box (Totally) CD set (Rhino 78239) than on the 45 and LP.

I recently learned this song was originally written for, and released on, the soundtrack to the 1983 movie A Night In Heaven. Not having the soundtrack, I only heard it as it played during the movie. To my ears it sounds like the same version that later became a #1 hit in 1985.
Can someone confirm there are no differences.

New question about this song: Has the live B-side version of "Heaven" on this single ever appeared on CD?

I bought the soundtrack to a night in heaven when I was a kid just to get that song after the original video was played on MTV. They actually made a DIFFERENT video when the song became a hit--but yes, as far as my ears could always tell, it's the same exact version.

The "A Night In Heaven" soundtrack also has the original
version of "Obsession" (later covered by Animotion), as
done by Michael Des Barres and Holly Knight.
Oddly, enough Animotion's other big hit, "Room To Move",
was also a remake (done originally by Climie Fisher).

This song got quite a bit of Top 40 airplay in early 1984 as an album cut from the movie soundtrack. In fact, it got as high as #2 on both of my hometown Top 40 stations (KDWB and WLOL) in March of 1984. It then became a #1 national hit when it was released as a proper single in 1985.

Extremely interesting little factoid, there, Mr. Haney! I never knew anything
of it. And, upon further examination (you know what I mean, and I'll go sort
that all out ASAP!), there were also a good many other Top 40 markets who
similarly charted "Heaven" as an LP cut in '84. Paul, if you happen to know
of/stumble upon any other such examples of this "pre-hit-45, LP cut airplay"
in your travels, please share. I believe them to be quite noteworthy. :)

Even though Boston had 3 full-market signal CHRs in 1984 (WZOU, WHTT & Kiss 108), I don't recall any of them playing this song prior to it being a single.

WGCL-FM (G98) in Cleveland also played "Heaven" in 1984 from the soundtrack album. I definitely remember hearing it early, because when I got the LP when it came out, I knew the song already.

To answer Brian's question, the only place I've seen the "B" side "Diana" on CD is on a CD 3" single. It may be on other CDs but that's the only place I've seen it.

To Bill Cahill:
I believe Brian was asking about the US b-side of the 45 of "Heaven" (both promo & commercial copies). That was "Heaven 'live'". The UK b-side of "Heaven" was "Diana" (non-lp in the US).

Yes, Andrew is correct. I was asking about the US B-side, the live version of "Heaven," recorded at the Hollywood Palladium on Feb. 1, 1985.

Yeah you're right, I confused the CD 3 I have with a 12 inch vinyl UK import that features Heaven, Heaven Live, and Diana. The CD3 actually has Run To You with Diana, not even Heaven.

Brian, I just noticed that the live version of "Heaven" was also part of the
promo 12" single we were sent (A&M SP 17318): Here are its full contents:
Side One:
1-Heaven (LP Version) (listed 4:03)
Side Two:
1-Heaven "Live" (listed 4:00)
2-(another song, "Kids Wanna Rock" Live (listed 3:14))

Hearing the "Live" version of "Heaven" just took me back to 1985, when I would play the b-side of my 45 as a kid. I probably haven't heard it since, until just now.
The promo 12" copy that Jim describes above has "Heaven" and "Kids Wanna Rock" separated only by about 3 or 4 seconds of audience applause. "Heaven" does not fade out on the 12" like it does on the 45. I will now go pull out my stock copy of the 45 to see if there is additional audience applause on the fade out, or if the 12" copy can be faded to match.

As suspected, the 45 has an additional :09 seconds of audience applause on the fadeout that is not heard on the promo 12" "Live" version. So, to summarize:
The promo 12" version of "Heaven" (Live) runs 4:02 from the audience fade in until very start of "Kids Wanna Rock."
The stock 45 "Live" B-side has a listed time of 4:13 but runs 4:11.

I also have been wanting to get the live B-Side of "Heaven" for a long time. I remember that it was played at least once on "American Top 40" during its chart run and that was the first time I heard it. I thought it might have been included on his "Live! Live! Live!" album, but according to Wikipedia, the version on there was recorded in 1988 in Belgium, whereas the live B-Side was recorded at the Hollywood Palladium on February 1, 1985. So I guess it's safe to assume the live B-Side version has never appeared on CD.

Hi,
Diana appears on the 1988 Japan issued Hits On Fire Catalog: D50Y
Hits On Fire also has a live version of Heaven that to me seems like a different version than on "Live, Live, Live". On Hit's the track is 4:03 and the music stops approximately at 3:55/3:56. Live, Live, Live the track is 4:16 and the music stops around 4:06/4:07. Music starts on both versions at about :01/:02
To me they appear to be different performances. I don't know if the Hits version is the Heaven b-side or not. If links to fair usage samples are permitted to be posted here I'll be glad to do so. Just let me know which 25-30 second of the track is desired.
Hit's also contain a Live "Kid's Want To Rock" that to me seems rather different from Live,Live,Live. Again let me know about samples.
