I will continue with the way I did 1987: LISTED times only. If anybody has a specific question, I'll be happy to go back and get an actual time for you. When no listed time is given, I furnish an actual time.

** - on occasion, in the early days of the Promo CD single, a company would put two entirely different songs/artists on the same Promo CD. They all were remixed by Jam/Lewis... not only remixed, but the single features a largely or entirely different vocal take by George Michael.

What about their follow up in 1989; "Walking Away". I have a worn stock 45-rpm disc on Tommy Boy Records. Has the single mix ever been issued on CD?

I know there was a thread about this song, but I don't think the answer was contained within.
I have both a US promo 45 (3:42 listed time) and the stock 45 (5:55 listed time). Oddly enough, the Canadian 45 has a 3:57 listed time (I don't have it though).
Was there ever a US promo 45 with the 3:57 version? I remember hearing 3 different versions on the radio in 1988 - the full LP verison, the short promo 45 version, and another slightly longer version that included a bit of the "slow guitar solo" between verses 1 and 2, which would account for the extra 15 seconds. I know the video had another version entirely, but I never heard that one on the radio.
Was the 3:57 version on promo CD single only (and probably the Canadian 45), or was there another promo 45 with this on?
Anyone know?

The 3:57 version is the same one you have on your promo 45. That 45 has an incorrect time listed; it's not really 3:42.
There are three different remix/edits with actual times of 3:58, 4:15, and 4:55. The latter two are on a promo CD, but I don't know if they ever made it to promo 45s.

Regarding Cheap Trick's "Don't Be Cruel", I noticed that the version on the Promo CD Single is labelled as "Big New Mix". However, there's no mention of a "Big New Mix" on the commercial 45, Cassette Single or promo 45. Do we know if this "Big New Mix" is the one that was also used on the 45 and Cassette Singles? Also, how does it differ from the album version? (I assume the Album Version would be different since they labelled another version as a "New Mix").

Re: Jermaine Stewart - Say It Again - ASCD-9668
I looked on Discogs, but didn't see a listing for this. I also checked eBay and MusicStack and nothing there, either. Does anyone know what tracks are on the disc?

Hey Dan,
The Jermaine Stewart is listed on Discogs, but perhaps you couldn't find it, because it's a two-artist promo CD:
https://www.discogs.com/Jermaine-Stewart-Kashif-Say-It-Again -Love-Me-All-Over/release/8359412
The disc contains the "Single Version" (listed 4:07) of "Say It Again" and three versions of "Love Me All Over" by Kashif.
Regarding "Don't Be Cruel," your assumption is correct. The promo CD has the same mix found on most CDs, including Greatest Hits and re-pressings of Lap Of Luxury. The obvious giveaway of the LP mix that it doesn't have the "ahhh-ahhh-ahhh-ahhh" vocal at very beginning. The LP mix is subtly different throughout when compared with the 45 version.

Thanks Aaron. I never noticed that Discogs listing at all. I was looking under the "Say It Again" listings and had no idea the promo was issued with songs from another artist.
I compared the LP Version and Big New Mix of the Cheap Trick song on YouTube. I figured the main difference between the two would be the "aaah-aaah-aaah-aaah"'s at the beginning. But I did notice that at one point the guitars seem to be further up in front on the new mix. Also, the New Mix sounds a little "brighter" to me, but that's just my opinion.
Have any of those other 77 songs you listed as not being known to have promos turned up at all since you posted the list?

I haven’t come across any of the missing 77 since then, no. I believe
I’ve tracked down a couple more that were not top 40 hits, though.

I wish there had been a promo of Debbie Gibson's "Foolish Beat", because it might have included the Instrumental B-Side from the commercial single. None of the other CD single configurations from around the world have it, and it's also not on the "Singles A's & B's" collection from a few years ago. I don't think it's been on CD at all.

Even if one had been issued, I'd say the likelihood of it including an instrumental would've been quite low. None of the Hot 100 charting Debbie Gibson US promo CD singles have an instrumental. There's a strong possibility, though, I have an unplayed 45 I can dub for you.

Oh that would be great! I've been wanting a copy of it for the past 32 years, lol. You'd definitely have my eternal gratitude if you could do a dub. (But just so you know, I'm also grateful to be a part of this forum and gain the vast amount of knowledge there is on here about Top 40 music and the many different versions of the hits and where to find them).
I always liked the Instrumental, especially for the saxophone. It sounds kind of "Smooth Jazz-y" to me. I even remember reading somewhere at the time, someone praising the instrumental. It might have been in a newspaper. They said something along the lines of "Foolish Beat" being a typical, Top 40 Pop Song, but to turn the record over and you'd find something even better (meaning the Instrumental). The line, "Just a foolish beat of my heart" is heard on the Instrumental, but that's it.
I'm sure you're right about a promo most likely not including an instrumental version. However, with the fact that there's an Extended Version of the song, it sure would have been nice to see the LP, Extended and Instrumental Versions all in one place.

I also definitely have a NM copy of the 12” single, so that’s another
possible source, assuming it’s the same as the b-side of the 45.

It probably is the same. The 45 label lists the running time of the Instrumental as 4:29 and the 12" label lists it as 4:28. I can't imagine that they'd feel the need to make more than one instrumental for something that was only supposed to be a B-Side anyway.
By the way, there is another promo CD Single for Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" than the one you have listed. I bought it myself last year and it is on Discogs.
Robert Palmer - "Simply Irresistible" (DPRO 04140)
1. 7" Version (4:18)
2. Extended Version (6:33)

Good catch, Dan! I also picked up a copy of that promo CD a couple years ago. I just added it to the above list.
Regarding "Foolish Beat," you're probably right. I'll pull the 12" single, as that is likely to be a better sounding source than the 45.
