Anyone know what's up with Wayne Newton's 1980 top 40 hit Years? It's not in Pat's database at all and to my knowledge has never appeared on any import or domestic CD. Been looking for a non-vinyl version for years (no pun intended!) and was interested to know if anyone found it.

Running time is 3:53 for the 45 version.

"Years" only peaked at #32 Cash Box / #35 Billboard / #61
in Record World. That lower Record World peak is most
likely what kept it out of Pat's database.

I'm pretty sure the song made at least one of Newton's
Curb compilations, but it was either a remix or a totally
new recording, I can't remember exactly which. The
original single was on the Aries II label, so it's not
surprising that it hasn't shown up much over the years.

I think you're right about the comp being a re-recording. I believe I have
more than one 45 copy, and I think mine are pressed on styrene. As I
recall, my copies all have styrene distortion in places.

It’s odd that the song isn’t in the database, since it is listed in the 10th
and final edition of Pat’s Top 40 Music On Compact Disc book. It
indicates the song’s only CD appearance as being on a Curb CD
consisting entirely of re-recordings.

Barbara Mandrell’s version of the song reached #1 on the country chart
the same month that Newton’s version debuted on the Hot 100, but I
don’t know who recorded it first.

Paul, there are a few songs that have changed status over the years. It's possible that Pat changed his "consensus hit" formula, which caused some of them to drop out (or be added, not sure).

I ordered the following CD this morning. Its the only one listed on discogs and yes its from Curb so you guys can compare the vinyl dropped 45 to the CD copy I obtain. It was my last ditch effort to collect this top 40 hit.

https://www.discogs.com/Wayne-Newton-The-Best-Of-Wayne-Newto n-Now/release/8515937

With that being said it sticks out as a sore thumb as the last remaining top 40 hit from 1980 on Billboard that is not sourced from vinyl that is needed to round out the collection digitally.

I take it Aaron that you've tried doing a dub and you got distortion on it? Is there any way to order a pristine copy?

My styrene copies get distorted during the loud parts, yes, but I found I also have two vinyl copies that sound better during these passages.

I'm almost positive that the Curb CD is all re-recordings. In fact, I may have that CD in my collection somewhere.

OK, I finally had a chance to do an A/B comparison of "Years" from the Curb "Best Of" CD. I think it would classify more as a remix rather than a re-recording, although there is one line where the vocal differs. Here are the main differences:

- Curb version has an acoustic guitar overdub
- Curb version has more reverb on lead vocal
- Curb version has the strings brought up much louder in the mix, especially on the intro and verses
- Curb version has an alternate vocal on the line "you feel so near" at 28 seconds into the song

All the other instrumentation and vocals are the same between the two. I wonder if this "remix" was done at the time the song was recorded rather than specifically for the Curb CD. It's not necessarily more modern sounding, just different.

For all the Wayne Newton hits over the years to make it to CD, this baffles me why they even had to take a different mix. I listened to it and its clear that Wayne's vocals are much louder than the 45 version Aaron you are right.

I'm not aware of this song ever making an import, so I guess the original 45 never made it to CD at all.

There's a series of 6 CDs called "Dynasty Collection" that may be of interest to Wayne Newton collectors. I found the full series used once, and bought one of the discs that included the song "The Letter", just so I'd have a copy of this notorious song. The discs are odd, with no copyright date at all.

Here's a link on Amazon to one of the discs that purports to include the song "Years". I can't vouch for these, but if you're really intent on finding "Years" on CD, there's one listed at the link for dirt cheap.

I couldn’t resist the temptation and ordered this CD. Unfortunately, the
version of “Years” is the same version as on the Curb CD. Until Aaron
pointed it out, I hadn’t noticed that the two versions were made from the
same basic recording.

The versions of Newton’s three other Top 40 hits on this CD are all the
hit versions, although “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast” has the
channels reversed. The two Capitol hits are licensed from Capitol and
are in good sound with the channels reversed compared to the Capitol
Collectors Series CD.

Well that leaves the 45 sadly as the only place to get it....

Is it possible that this mix is just an LP mix rather
than the 45 mix?

I have the LP, and it’s identical to the 45. The Curb version definitely
does not match the LP.

I wouldn't waste your time getting the Curb version like I did...I would not even classify it as an LP mix or 45 mix. My understanding is that it was rerecorded because the original rights to the original recording could not be obtained.

According to Aaron's post above, his findings are that
the Curb recording matches the 45 up to a point though
the mix is different and there is a certain spot where
there is an alternate lead vocal.

LunarLaugh check your PM for an analysis of the versions.

I gave Aaron the Curb recording from The Best of CD a long time ago. I listened to that and the 45 and "matching up to a certain point" with "alternate lead vocals" is why I don't consider it a 45 mix or an LP mix. A true 45 mix in my opinion would not add a vocal that was never there, change a lot of the instrumentation (strings, reverb etc.) The entire feel of the song for me is off in comparison to the 45 version. I'm not an expert, I am just sharing with you why I don't label it as a 45 mix. To each their own.

Like I said earlier, the Curb version exists because the original rights to the original recording could not be obtained by Curb. A good portion of The Best of has been rerecorded, most likely including Years. Aaron labeled it a "remix" and I would probably say that is correct.

Aries II records originally put out a lot of Wayne Newton stuff in 1979-1980. Often times when an artist switched labels, the label would have them record a new version. Kenny Rogers did it all the time, as did other artists of the time period.
