Given that, to my knowledge, there really is no single authoritative source that one can reference for compiling a comprehensive and definitive U.S. Christmas/holiday music library, I've taken the liberty of attempting to compile one myself. (Unfortunately, even Billboard has been very erratic and inconsistent over the years with publishing charts and data regarding new and popular Christmas songs being played on radio/streaming sources and sold in stores.
Below is a list of more than 780 Christmas/holiday songs that have appeared at one time on a Billboard chart and/or I have personally heard played on radio stations and/or streaming services over the years. I don't know if I'll ever be able to come up with a "perfect" or "exhaustive" list, but I certainly welcome any suggestions from forum board members regarding additional entries that should be considered worthy of being included. In turn, I will update the list as needed. (Please note that some entries have multiple years listed. If there is a "/" separating two years, this indicates the year a song was first recorded, followed by the year the song became a national hit, respectively. If commas and/or the word "and" separates the years listed, this denotes that there were multiple recordings of that particular song released by the artist):

song can be extracted, I know it would be an ant task, but
at least it would give information about where
Search each song with good sound quality.

I don't see "It Must Have Been The Mistletoe" - Barbara Mandrell listed. Might have not charted, but certainly was/is a Christmas classic.

Burl Ives - "Silver and Gold" (1964)
And Annie Lennox & Al Green - "Put A Little Love in Your
Heart" (1988) always gets played during the holiday season,
even though it's not a holiday song, because it was
featured on the "Scrooged" soundtrack.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback, kaqueno. However, I will leave it to other forum members to attempt to list CD information for each track if they wish to undertake that sizable task. In the meantime, one can always visit a website like the www.allmusic.com website to research where to find specific songs on CD.

Oh, yes! That's a good one, Hykker. I went ahead and added it to the list. Thanks!

Funny that you mention Burl Ives' "Silver and Gold" because I initially included it on the list, but then I wondered if I have actually ever heard that song played on radio/streaming stations or only while watching the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV Christmas special. I've now reconsidered and added the song back to the list.
Meanwhile, I'm still debating whether to include Annie Lennox & Al Green's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" for the reason you state (not being a holiday song). I remain partial toward not including it mainly because it does not show up in Joel Whitburn's Christmas in the Charts 1920-2004 reference book, despite being a Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit. But if there are others who say they are hearing "Put A Little Love in Your Heart" on Christmas/holiday music channels and think it should be included on a definitive Christmas/holiday song list, then I may consider adding it in the future.

Same could be said for "Same Old Lang Syne". Other than his chance meeting with his old flame happening on Christmas Eve, it's not really a
Christmas song, though it seems to have become one.

As soon as I posted that, I knew someone was going to bring up Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne". :-) You're right, I don't believe it was ever intended to be an official holiday song, even though the single was first released in November 1980, opens with the lyrics "Met my old lover in the grocery store... The snow was falling Christmas Eve", and concludes with the slow saxophone solo of "Auld Lang Syne", which of course is a Guy Lombardo classic traditionally sung in North America after the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. I don't have access to my Joel Whitburn books at the moment since I'm currently on the road, but I'm pretty sure none of his books recognize "Same Old Lang Syne" with a holiday song designation. Nonetheless, I think we can all agree the song has become such a staple on Christmas/holiday music formats over the years that I feel comfortable including it on a definitive Christmas/holiday songs list. And now that Dan Fogelberg's music catalog in general sadly seems to have become phased out of radio and streaming playlists over the past couple of decades, I personally find it refreshing and heartwarming to hear "Same Old Lang Syne" during the Christmas season every year, especially given that it happens to be my personal favorite song by the late artist.

Hi Todd,
Great to read through this immense list! Is there a link to the Hot 100 Christmas songs only? I'm not a
subscriber to Billboard and the regular Hot 100 only lists a fraction of Christmas songs.
Meaghan Trainor - Jingle Bells is getting play in 2024.
Here are some listed on the Mediabase A/C chart, which I presume means current airplay.
for KING & COUNTRY - Silent Night [Rewrapped]
Harper Grace - Santa Baby
Joey McIntyre feat. Shoshana Bean - A Brand New Christmas
Josh Groban & The War & Treaty - Do You Hear What I Hear
Laufey - Santa Baby
Michael Buble & Carly Pearce - Maybe This Christmas
Wyn Starks - The Christmas Song
Dean Martin - It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
Dan + Shay - Pick Out A Christmas Tree
Jimmy Fallon & Jonas Brothers - Holiday
Kelly Clarkson - You For Christmas
Pentatonix - Meet Me Next Christmas

Never mind, I found it

At least it's not behind a paywall.

Nice list. Perfect for a station that goes 100% holiday music.
One that should be played more often is "Sock It To Me Santa" by Bob Seger and the Last Heard (1966) on the Cameo label.
It's on my list, but nobody plays it (I did hear it a week ago on an internet radio station that plays obscure oldies).

Hey, John!
Thanks for the heads-up regarding the Mediabase AC chart. For the record, I typically add Christmas songs to the definitive list that have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary chart. Unfortunately, Billboard makes that chart available only through a paywall and, up to this point, I have only been able to find scans online of the publication's AC charts up through 2021. Now, Billboard's website currently shows that Jimmy Fallon & The Jonas Brothers "Holiday" is #1 on the AC chart for the week ending December 21, 2024 (same as on the Mediabase AC chart), so I will at least add that entry to the definitive Christmas/holiday songs list for now.
Also, I am adding V (of BTS) & Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" to the list since the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the chart week of December 14, 2024.

A couple classic rock stations I've been involved with over the years played it. Not a lot of Christmas songs compatible with that
format.

Yogi Yorgesson – "Yingle Bells" (1949) |

|
I wish I could find this on CD without all the added
reverb that is on all Capitol/EMI issues, but it doesn't
appear to exist. The reverb seems to have been added in
1961 for the Capitol album "The Great Comedy Hits of Yogi
Yorgesson," and that's the only master that's ever been
used on CD.
The puzzling thing is, on that original album they also
added reverb to its B-side, "I Yust Go Nuts at
Christmas," but most or all CD appearances of that are
bone dry.
"Yingle Bells" is available dry on a few gray-area CDs
and downloads, but the sound quality isn't very good.
