Here are a couple of older CDs that are oddly missing
from the listings in the 10th edition, even though they
both contain top 40 hits:
01) MARTIN BRILEY (pg. 121) - His 1983 hit, "The Salt in
My Tears", is shown as only ever being released on a V/A
compilation titled "80's Greatest Rock Hits - Agony &
Ecstasy" on Priority 53681, w/ a timing of (3:13).
However, the song's original 1983 parent album, "One
Night With a Stranger", was indeed released on CD here in
the U.S. at the time. (Label & no. was Mercury 810332.)
In fact, it was one of the earliest albums to be issued
on CD Stateside - back when Mercury/PolyGram still relied
on West Germany for its CD manufacturing. Of course, the
album is long out-of-print in all formats. (I bought it
on cassette myself back in '83, and still have it to this
day.) The CD version is of course the rarest - so much
so, that it often fetches $100+ whenever used copies turn
up on eBay (everybody wants it for "The Salt in My
Tears"!). I've never owned the 45, but Joel Whitburn
lists the single version of "Salt..." as having a running
time of (3:27). A music buddy of mine happens to have the
rare CD, though, and I checked the timing on it - sure
enough, "Salt..." comes in at (3:27). So evidently, that
also means that the (3:13) version on the Priority
compilation should have the added notation "(neither the
LP or 45 version)" or perhaps "(:14 shorter than the LP
or 45 version)", or something like that...
02) PEBBLES (pgs. 840-841) - In 2000, Universal released
a 14-track collection on her, simply titled "Greatest
Hits". (Label & no. is Hip-O 314542521.) It's still in
print, and I just picked up the CD myself. It features
all four of her top 40 hits, and I checked the timings:
1988's "Girlfriend" (4:15) (listed as "single version" on
CD insert)
1988's "Mercedes Boy" (3:54) (listed as "single remix
version" on CD insert)
1990's "Giving You the Benefit" (4:26) (listed as "single
version" on CD insert)
1991's "Love Makes Things Happen" (4:31) (listed as
"single version" on CD insert)
The 10th edition lists the only other two CD appearances
of "Love Makes Things Happen" as both having a running
time of "(5:08)", w/ no additional notation. Clearly,
"(LP version)" should now be added to those, w/ "Greatest
Hits" being the first to feature the "(45 version)" on
CD...
And lastly, a recent release that came out after
publication of the 10th edition, but seems to have
slipped under the radar at most places (e.g., it was
never listed in "ice" magazine, only shows up at some
on-line retailers, etc.), so I just wanted to make folks
aware: Shortly after receiving my copy of the 10th
edition from Pat in early October, I finally decided that
I had to have Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' 15-track
collection, "Fit to Be Tied: Great Hits By...". But much
to my shock and disappointment, I quickly discovered it
was out-of-print! A few short weeks later, I found out
why - it seems that it was in the process of being
re-issued, and on November 16, the new version hit stores
(it's now on Blackheart 483371831). Track listing is
identical to the original on Blackheart/Mercury
314536440, including the "previously unreleased version"
of "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and the "previously
unreleased live version" of "Little Liar" (neither is
noted as such in the 10th edition, although Pat posted
about this on the "Errata/Corrections" page on November
4). Sadly, the new re-issue doesn't include the mutimedia
content that was apparently added to the Mercury
originals,
though...

Regarding Martin Briley's "Salt In My Tears", all I can offer right now is that the version on "80's Greatest Rock Hits - Agony & Ecstasy" is not the 45 version. I do not own the vinyl LP or compact disc so I cannot comment on whether this is the LP version or not. My commercial 45 does say "long" (running 3:27) on the label so quite possibly there is a dj edit that corresponds with the version found on "80's Greatest Rock Hits". Anyone have a dj edit?

Just noticed another omission of an older CD release in
the 10th edition:
01) MANFRED MANN (pgs. 692-693) - Manfred Mann's Earth
Band's 1984 hit, "Runner", is shown as only ever
appearing on a V/A compilation titled "Back on My Feet
Again" on Relativity 1688, w/ a timing of (4:39).
Although the song's original 1983 parent album,
"Somewhere in Afrika" (sic), was only released on LP and
cassette by Arista at that time (bought the cassette
myself, and still have it to this day), it was actually
re-issued on CD here in the U.S. by the One Way label in
1997. (Saw it in stores several times in the late '90s,
and nearly bought the album again just to have "Runner"
on CD. However, the One Way re-issue of "Somewhere in
Afrika" is now out-of-print as well, so it's getting a
little tough to find.) But as luck would have it, that
same music buddy of mine w/ the Martin Briley CD also has
the One Way CD by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, so I gave
him another quick call this morning. Again, I had him
actually put the CD in his player, and give me the
running time for the song. (Apparently the CD even gave
slightly conflicting times - the insert said "Runner" was
"4:40", while "4:41" was printed on the disc itself!) He
said it actually faded out completely at 4:38, so it
apparently matches the version on the Relativity
compilation. I've never owned the 45, but Joel Whitburn
lists the single version of "Runner" as having a timing
of (3:38). Assuming that's true (or pretty close,
anyway), then the notation "(LP version)" also needs to
be added next the listings of both CD appearances of the
song...
As for "The Salt in My Tears", as I noted in my initial
post, I can tell you that the version found on Priority
53681 is definitely NOT the LP version, either. Although
I probably didn't make it very clear, I got the timing of
(3:27) off the "One Night With a Stranger" CD after
calling my friend on the phone, and having him literally
put it in his CD player, and then quote me the running
time. (And as you can see, that timing apparently matches
the commercial 45; I have no idea whether or not a "dj
edit" exists w/ a running time of just 3:13, or why your
commercial 45 states "long" - although I find that a bit
curious.) Hope that clarifies things a bit...

Another omission:
01) TOM TOM CLUB (pg. 1126) - The group's 1982 hit,
"Genius of Love", is shown as appearing only in its
(5:34) "LP version" on its 1981 parent album, simply
titled "Tom Tom Club", on Sire 3628. While I know that
was true of the original vinyl LP & cassette releases,
current pressings of the CD re-issue include four "bonus
tracks", one of them being the "long version" of "Genius
of Love" (in addition to the original 5:34 LP version). I
have this CD re-issue, and according to the liner notes
in the booklet, this additional mix is actually the
original 12" version. The back insert says it runs
(7:24), but I checked it, and it actually comes in at
(7:26). So I feel this 12" version should be added to the
song's listings. Perhaps these "bonus tracks" weren't on
the original CD pressings of Sire 3628???

Yes, the 12" version of "Genius Of Love" is on the original Sire 3628 cd titled "Tom Tom Club" so I will add it to the database.

A few more errors/omissions that I recently spotted:
01) FALCO (pg. 374) - The correct title of his 1986 album
on A&M 5105, which contains his top 40 hits "Rock Me
Amadeus" and "Vienna Calling", is "Falco 3" (it was his
third album), not "Falco"...
02) STEVE FORBERT (pg. 398) - The listings for his 1980
hit, "Romeo's Tune", do not include his 1993 compilation
on Nemperor/Epic Associated 53170, "The Best of...: What
Kinda Guy?". I have both the CD and cassette versions
myself...
03) POWER STATION (pgs. 865-866) - The group's 1985 hit,
"Communication", is misspelled "Communiction". (And for
other fans of this band, I highly recommend picking up
the new two-disc deluxe version of their 1985 album on
EMI/Capitol 72438-66315-0-3. In addition to being
digitally remastered, it now features seven bonus tracks
and a DVD! It just hit stores today, and will definitely
need to be added to the 11th edition, as it now includes
the single versions of "Some Like it Hot" and "Get it On
[Bang a Gong]", as well as two additional mixes of
"Communication".)

Several more:
01) PATRICE RUSHEN (pg. 964) - Her 1982 hit, "Forget Me
Nots", is shown as appearing only in its (4:43) "LP
version" on its 1982 parent album, "Straight from the
Heart", on Rhino 73508. However, like w/ the Tom Tom Club
above, the CD re-issue on Rhino 73508 of the original
Elektra LP/cassette adds both the (4:04) "45 version" and
(7:11) "12" version" of "Forget Me Nots" at the end of
the disc (along w/ some additional bonus tracks). This is
significant, since according to the 10th edition, the 12"
version has yet to appear on any other U.S. CD (although
I do have it on a Canadian import myself)...
02) STEVIE B (pg. 1052) - His 1991 hit, "I'll Be By Your
Side", is misspelled "I'll Be By You Side"...
03) ROD STEWART (pgs. 1054-1058) - His 1979 hit, "Da Ya
Think I'm Sexy?", is misspelled "Do You Think I'm Sexy?"
(although admittedly, I've never understood the "correct"
spelling myself!)...
04) STEPHEN STILLS (pg. 1058) - His 1971 hit, "Sit
Yourself Down", is currently shown as only ever appearing
on the original CD release of "Stephen Stills" on
Atlantic 7202. However, the listings for his previous
1971 hit, "Love the One You're With" (which also appeared
on Atlantic 7202), also indicates the release of a
"remastered edition" of the same album on Atlantic 82809.
While I don't have this remastered edition, I assume it
stands to reason that "Sit Yourself Down" is also
featured on Atlantic 82809???

I was browsing in the music dept. at my local Borders
bookstore earlier today, when I walked past their section
of CD box sets. Included in the bin was the 2002 7-disc
set titled "Like, Omigod! The '80$ Pop Culture Box
(Totally)", on Rhino 78239. Of course, being the
"80smusicfreak" that I am, I'd checked out this extensive
box set before. :-) However, at about $100, I'd always
felt it was a bit pricey, as that still averages out to
more than $14 per disc! But today I decided to give it
another look, to see if I felt it had enough rarities on
it to justify possibly buying it...
Well, my eyes opened a bit wider when I read what track
#6 on disc 4 was - ironically, it's none other than "The
Salt in My Tears" by Martin Briley! Of course, having
discussed the song here earlier in this thread, I knew it
wasn't listed as being on the Rhino box set in the 10th
edition. So when I got home, I double-checked a few other
tracks from the collection to see if they were in the
10th edition, and they were indeed listed, so I know Pat
must have that box...
Was "The Salt in My Tears" not on original pressings of
Rhino 78239, or did it just somehow slip through the
cracks??? Have any other tracks since been changed (I
know from Pat's book that Rhino has done so w/ other
collections in the past), or were otherwise inadvertently
left out of the listings in the 10th edition??? Also, I'd
be curious to know the timing of the song on the box set
- is it some sort of edit, like on Priority 53681, or do
we get the full (3:27) "LP version"???
Also, more news for fans of Martin Briley and/or "The
Salt in My Tears": According to the March issue of "ice"
magazine (#216), on March 25, the Hip-O Select label
supposedly put out a 2-CD set of his best Mercury tracks
(he released three albums for the label), which no doubt
includes the song as well. I don't yet have that new
release, and curiously, I see there is still no mention
of the Martin Briley collection on the label's official
web site (www.hip-oselect.com), so I don't know if the
March 25 date held, or if it was pushed back...
For the record, the Hip-O Select label is mail-order only
(designed much like Rhino's special "Rhino Handmade"
division), but since Pat now includes mail-order titles
in his book from both Time-Life and Collectors' Choice
Music, I assume future editions will include Rhino
Handmade and Hip-O Select releases as
well???

The Salt In My Tears is definitely on the 80's Pop Culture box set and it is an oversight on my part not to have listed it in the 10th editon. The song is stereo and runs 3:27 on this box set.
Now to answer your other question about mail order cd's, both Time-Life and Collectors' Choice cd's are now available through major distribution wholesalers and that is why they have been included in past editions of Top 40 Music On Compact Disc. Hip-O Select on the other hand has refused to distribute their product through wholesalers and their product will not be included in the next edition for this reason. Not to mention that they have failed to return my phone calls, letters and emails requesting review copies.

I also picked up this terrific remastered and expanded edition of Power Station's self-titled CD recently and am pleased to discover that one of the remixes of "Communication" on this disc is actually the 45 version! It's on Track 14 and runs 3:50. The 45 version has a longer intro than the LP version and thus the lead vocal doesn't come in until the :23 mark, whereas the lead vocal begins at the :07 point on the LP version.

the martin briley hit "the salt in my tears" appears on the omigod 80's box cd set and is identical to the 45 issuesd in 1983 on mercury 812165.......
