In the "DJ Edits" thread, there was some info posted about "Miracle" by Whitney Houston. I recently obtained a copy of the promo single, and I have some interesting news to report.

The insert of my copy has the catalog number ASCD-2222; however, the disc itself has a catalog number of ASCD-2252. The printed run time says (4:29), but the actual run time is (4:34). So, apparently there is more than one DJ single of "Miracle."

I read over that thread and didn't see any info as to what exactly's been deleted on the DJ edit (hopefully I didn't miss it)

So I'm going to borrow a question from Doug: how does the DJ edit differ from the album version?

I was actually listening to this song the other day and trying to think of where edits could have occured. I came up with a few that could have trimmed it down about a minute (I'll post them later if anyone's interested).

To be honest I didn't know there was an edit for that song. With certain songs, the way they're structured, to me it seems hard to do edits on them. Have there been any long songs out there that are just not possible to edit in a reasonable fashion?

To be honest, I'm not sure what was chopped out to make the edit. The only copy I own of this song is my newly acquired DJ single.

I have the "listed and actual" ASCD-2222 promo CD single. It has one track, no listed time, with an actual time of (4:58). I will shoot this version out to you, Aaron, so you can compare it against your (4:34) version.

I just compared Jim's version to mine, and here's my findings:

- the (4:34) edit removes from (3:02) to (3:19) of the longer DJ edit, cutting from "the choice" to "the voice"

- the (4:34) edit has a drum beat missing at (4:19); it's only a bongo on this edit, whereas the other DJ edit has a drum beat and bongo together---a mix difference rather than editing difference

- the (4:34) edit starts fading around (4:19), which is about 15 seconds earlier in the song than the longer edit

- the longer edit has a quick fade and about seven more seconds of audio at the end than the (4:34) version

I believe the commercial single version of "Miracle" is the same as its album counterpart, but can anyone confirm the exact commerical single run time for us?

I seem to recall that the cassingle used the album version and the 45 used the 4:34 edit... I think Ed can straighten us out on this.

Calling Ron G.,

Can you post edit points to recreate the 4:34 DJ edit?

Sorry, Ed, by 1991 I had "given up the ghost" when it came to buying commercial singles, due to massive 45 unavailability. Unlike you, I abhorred cassette singles, and at the time considered them useless. But had I known there'd by a Board like this, coming years down the road, I probably would've kept buying, though...

Thanks, cmmmbase. If you get a chance in the next few days, maybe you can time it for us.

I don't have the DJ edit. If you could send it out to me, I'll be happy to dissect it.

Long ago, I posted info above about the DJ edit and what is removed. There is one extra drum beat on the DJ edit that is nowhere to be found on the LP version, so you won't be able to make your own to get the "true" dj edit.

my commercial cassingle issued as arista 2222 contains, on both sides, a non described version which runs 5:41 and is identical to the version on the cd

(S) (5:41) Arista 8616 I'm Your Baby Tonight

i also have the commercial 45 with the same catalog number and it contains a non descibed version with a listed run time of 5:43 but actually runs 5:41....the run out groove of the 45 states "as-2222-sa-sp1-dmm"

my promo cd single issue as arista ascd-2222 contains only one track

1-miracle (4:59)

Well Ed, my friend, it looks like, (unless Arista also happened to issue an old 78RPM vinyl single for this song!), :) you appear to have singlehandedly provided us with all of the sound-carrying single formats for "Miracle". Nice job as always, sir!
