After doing some detective work for Ed, I have determined that the 45 and LP versions of "Livin' In Desperate Times" by Olivia Newton-John are not the same.
The database does not have any indicator, but I believe the CDs currently listed should have "LP version." The 45 is a remix that runs (3:58).
For those who care: The intro is different from the LP, starting with two guitar notes instead of a synth. Also the 2nd opening synth is slightly different on the 45. There are other mix differences throughout on the instrumentation, although the differences are slight.

You're on a roll today, Aaron... Keep those 45 version discoveries coming!
Every time I start thinking we must getting very close to having all DJ/45/LP versions/edits/mixes in existence accounted for, a bunch more pop up! When I first set out to collect all Top 40 hits on CD, I had absolutely no idea this hobby was going to blow up like this.
And I'm loving every minute of it!

Pat:
Thought I'd bump this thread from Aaron back up to the front of the pack because the database was never updated to reflect that all CD appearances to date of Olivia Newton-John's "Livin' in Desperate Times" should contain the comment: (LP version).

Greetings!
My first post and just thought I would point out that not only has the 45 Mix of Livin' In Desperate Times never made it to CD the mix that has been issued on the Two Of a Kind Soundtrack and 2 Disc Gold compilation are not the original LP version. It's a bad edit job that chops out one of the choruses. You can make the 45 mix from the 12" version but there's a unique "open up your eyes and watch me run" adlib not on the original LP that gives the song a better climax.
Long story short: the CD's listed for this in the database need to say neither the single mix or LP version....

Hey everyone - I had an mp3 of the single version of "Livin' in Desperate Times" but when I downloaded another version a friend sent to me, iTunes wiped out the version that I had. The version I was sent was simply an edit of the LP version and not the true single version. If anyone does have an mp3 of the single version and can help me out, I'd be very grateful. Just send me a PM. Damn iTunes. lol

I missed commenting on this back when it was first posted, but I'm surprised to learn that neither the 45 nor the correct LP version have ever been issued on a domestic CD! Is anyone aware of either one ever having appeared on an import release?
And a belated welcome to the message board, Glenpwood. Nice catch on your very first post!

Hey guys,
it's been years since I've had the vinyl soundtrack to Two of a Kind, but on discogs, the run time for Desperate Times on the vinyl soundtrack is 4:07, and on both Gold and Two of a Kind CDs, it's between 4:04 and 4:06, so I'm not sure how it could cut out one of the choruses, unless the time listed for the vinyl LP is incorrect and it's actually longer.
PS: sorry, forgot to add, I listened to it, and in the final set of choruses, it indeed sounds like it's been cut--like multiple times. The problem I'm having is that I've only listened to the 12" mix for decades so the entire CD version sounds completely chopped up to me. I don't know if I'm just imagining it because I'm used to the long version or if there are actually multiple edits, which still makes me wonder what the actual time of the vinyl LP version is.

Decided to finally clarify what is wrong with the CD appearances of this
song in its original album version. The song actually doesn't have an
chorus chopped as I originally stated/misremembered. The first change
comes at about the 2:25 mark with a slight mix difference then it
appears they edited in an alternate take or chopped in a different
chorus in an attempt to replicate the original. The vocal runs don't
match for most of the rest of the tune although they aren't too
drastically different when I synced up my Cd and original vinyl. Since it
was such a minor hit I'm sure Universal figured few people would
notice. The official word from them is the master tape was damaged.
No word as to why the single mix never gets pulled for the myriad of
ONJ comps. It might convince those of us who've tired of them to pick
them up if they used the edits of Soul Kiss & Don't Stop believin' or the
remixes of Totally Hot, Desperate, and The Rumour...

The 45 version has finally made it on to CD as a bonus track on the recent 40th anniversary deluxe edition of Physical. You can read the entire thread on that release here:
