you state that all commercial copies of the single run 3:32....both my cassingle and my 45 run 4:09, and are identical to the full cd/lp version.....could you have the promo/dj 45 as your point of reference....

My point of reference is indeed the promo vinyl 45 where the "A" side of this song is a remix which runs (3:32). The "B" side runs (4:09). Now comes the question of which side received the most airplay, the "A" side or the "B" side.

I dont remember ever hearing a remix of it on the radio when growing up, what my sister had on the album was what we heard on the radio.

In my area (Albany-Schenectady-Troy market) the 3:32 remix edit was the only version that recieved airplay.

The album mix was lame, and the remix had additional melodic hooks.

All the mainstream bars & clubs in this area played the long 12-inch version; the 3:32 was an edit of this.

Apparently the 4:09 version is the commercial 45 version, regardless of which received more airplay. It seems to me the shorter version should be referred to as DJ Edit in the database.

I could be mistaken but I think both versions were on the commercial 45. That is the problem in determining which side is the hit side. Whitburn seems to feel the remix is the hit side as he lists (3:32) as the running time in his Pop Annual.

interesting one here regarding the 45's matrix number.....the 45 does not state an a-side or a b-side, but using the standard procedure of the lower matrix number this one may be inconclusive...........the 4:09 side has a matrix number of zss 08092c while the 3:32 remix side has zss 08092a.....so maybe it's possible the remix IS the a-side.......anyone else with any info....although the 45's picture sleeve clearly states on the rear........"you got it (the right stuff)" b/w "you got it (the right stuff)" (remix)

I don't ever recall hearing the remix on any stations in my area. My TM Century GoldDisc also contains the (4:09) "single version."

Well... the A-side isn't necessarily the "hit" side, then. For example, the ODB remix of Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," which was the B-side of the single, is almost universally acknowledged as the "hit" version.

Maybe you could simply list (45 A-side) and (45 B-side) in the database. Or just list them as (LP Version) and (Remix), with a general note saying one side of the single featured the LP version and the other side the remix.

Interesting, Brian. I always considered the album version to be the hit version. Both top 40 stations in my area played the album version of "Fantasy." I was working at one of them, and given such a small market, we would almost ALWAYS play the non-rap version.

I remember when "Tha Crossroads" was a huge hit. For several weeks of its chart run, it was dayparted to play only after 5:00 PM. We also played the no-rap mix of "Waterfalls," "Twisted," and several other major hits of that time.

I imagine the major markets probably played the ODB mix. They were probably less concerned about playing "no rap" versions.

I just checked the database and it looks like Pat has pretty much gone with your suggestion, Brian. Should the 3:32 remix ever surface on a domestic CD release, I think a comment should appear next to that CD indicating that it is indeed the single remix.

Back in 1988-1989 the 7" remix was all the craze with the girls in my school and it got all the airplay. However it seems with the passage of time the single version on Track 1 is the one that everyone now accepts as the hit version, which I guess depends on what station you listened to and what part of the country you were in. I would consider the 7 inch mix as a hit version as well like Andrew mentioned.

Discogs also lists a promo 45 on Columbia
CS7-01335, which has the remix version on
both sides.

I don't recall hearing the remix in my area. The music video also uses
the Single Version (aka album version), so surely that's what MTV was
airing. Still, it seems that both are "hit" versions based on many other
markets playing the remix and the fact that it appears on the B-side.
