Although there is not a notation in the database, I know for certain some Styx CDs contain a re-recording of "Lady." I recall reading somewhere that A&M could not get the rights to the song (or didn't want to pay the asking price from the original label), so many CDs with this song are not the original hit version. Please correct me if I am wrong...

The re-recording was made in 1995 for the Greatest Hits CD and is titled "Lady '95". I note that its presence on the CD is not noted in the database, probably because it technically has a different title. I am not aware of this re-recording ever appearing on another CD.

You are right, Aaron, in that all of Styx's Top 40 singles were recorded on the A&M label, except for "Lady" which I believe is currently owned by Sony/BMG. However, I believe all listings for "Lady" on CD currently in the database consist of the original hit recording. Styx re-recorded the track for A&M in 1995 and I know this remake has at least appeared on the band's Greatest Hits CD (A&M 314540387). I assume the reason Pat doesn't list this track in the database is because the re-recorded version is called "Lady '95" and perhaps he thinks this is enough of a tip-off to consumers that this isn't the original hit version.

Ah, thanks for the info, guys! That's the CD I've heard the song on (Greatest Hits from '95). I actually don't own any of the others, but I'm glad to know that the re-recording is only on that one disc.

Incidentally, the actual commercial 45 run time of Styx's "Lady" is 2:57. (Thanks once again to Jim for providing the timing info. The printed record label time is 2:58.) The reason I post this is because the song's database CD times range from 2:54-3:03.

For "Lady 95", there's a digitally identical clone of Greatest Hits (1995) on Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 10 Heat Of The Moment (2007).

I suspect that all the 3:03-3:04 versions of the song are the rerecorded version.

The orignal "Lady" was on Wooden Nickel Records. In the
other thread, Jim said it was later Wooden Nickel/RCA.

John, Wooden Nickel had a marketing and distribution deal with RCA in those days. That's what Jim was referring to when he mentioned "Wooden Nickel/RCA." Wooden Nickel still controls the Styx material it issued, even though it hasn't been distributed by RCA in years. That 2-CD Styx Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings set Hip-O issued in 2005 was licensed from Wooden Nickel, not RCA.

("Lady" sounds much better on the RCA Nipper compilation Ron mentioned in the "Lady" thread than it does on the too-loud Hip-O comp.)
