Ray Davies is surely one of the best songwriters of
the rock era and even though he could not slip
"Coca-Cola" past the BBC, he did get one of his best
lyrics past the censor on "Apeman" with "the air
pollution is a 'Fog-kin' up my eyes"... yeah, right... one
of the KInks finest, it's a "fogkin" shame this wasn't a
bigger hit, but i'm wondering if this is at all related to
the "LP version lyrics" vs. 45 version lyrics? i also
detect a fairly different mix on the mono 45 version,
especially the jungle noises during the spoken
passage (~ 1:40 on the LP version)

At this point I'm not really sure the line "Foggin' up my eyes" was re-sung for the 45 as I originally thought. The 45 mix features the vocal much hotter so it's more obvious that he's singing "foggin". The LP mix buries his vocal a bit and it sounds like he's using the "F" word but it may just be because of the mix. In any event, there is at least a significant difference in the mix to deserve a notation of some kind. Instead of LP lyrics maybe it should be LP mix. Unless someone else knows differently.

The mono single version of this song can be had on the
recent two CD deluxe edition of Lola Versus Powerman And
The Moneygoround on the Sanctuary label (and yes it's a US
release).
