I only own a promo 45 for this one. One side of the promo has a listed time of (2:59), an actual time of (3:00), and states the title as "Grandma's Hands (with Monologue)." This side features Withers at the start, speaking for about a minute about his grandmother. I DO remember hearing this "monologue" on my local radio station, back in 1971. The other side, titled "Grandma's Hands (without Monologue)", appears to be the same as the stock 45 version, with a listed time of (2:00), but an actual time of (1:58).

According to my research, "Grandma's Hands" first appeared on the 1971 Bill Withers LP Just As I Am. This album has never been issued on CD, to my knowledge. Does anyone know if "Grandma's Hands" contains the monologue on the LP? If so, then we've uncovered another 45/LP version distinction here.

Todd, I have the vinyl LP "Just As I Am" and there is no monologue preceding the track or even as part of the track "Grandma's Hands".

That's good to know, Pat. It's interesting that this monologue version was created and evidently only made available to radio stations.
