On the radio and on the "Only Hits" CD, the word "god" is blanked out before the word "damn" in the chorus. I assume on the band's CD it is not. Can anyone verify? If so, the radio version would have to be considered the 'censored' version.

I know in Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't A Scene..." "God" is dropped before the word "damn". Is this the song you mean?
My file, from JonesTM is labeled [Radio Edit]

I think he's referring to the song "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." I don't own the album, but an online sample of that track confirms that it is not censored on the LP version. The official name of the censored version is simply called "Edit" on the promo CD.

Aaronk is correct. I speak of "I write sins..." it's the band's only top 40 hit so far. Think we'll see them on VH1's One Hit Wonders countdown in 10 years?

One could only hope.
Young audiences have very little connection with artists.
There's very little if any artist development at record lables these days.
Most of today's music should come equipped with a freshness date like a loaf of bread.
Disposable as a loaf of old bread.

My error on thinking the track mentioned was Fall Out Boy.
Seems like a lot of tracks these days push the envelope on lyrics and content. Not like the good ol' days!
Thank goodness I get service from JonesTM for my business.
The xtra clean edits are quite nice! :)

I hope they sound better than what plays on the radio. I'll be honest, the practice of "cleaning up" a song for radio airplay by simply silencing the offensive word makes most of the songs sound awful to me. It comes off like the singer has a stuttering problem.
I much prefer the way things used to be done, by dubbing a more acceptable word or phrase over "bad word"... ala "son of a gun" versus "son of a bitch" in "The Devil Went Down To Georgia".
Though, to be perfectly honest, I'd truly prefer that the artist showed a bit more restraint in their lyrics. And no, I don't support censorship. It's just that, to me, it doesn't really add anything to the song.

I agree. It certainly would be nice if the artist would take time to re-cut the lyrics for singles that hava a lot of profanity. Muting the vocals is annoying for songs that have lots of cursing; however, if it's only one or two times, I can live with it.

Like Akon, with "I Wanna Love You." I had no idea till I heard the uncensored version that the song was actually "I wanna f*** you." It's sort of... a whole different song.

That would be quite a thread to weave concerning songs that have had to be altered for radio play since the dawn of the rock era.
Altered meaning profanity or other reasons.
Add Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder" to the list it drops a big fat F bomb a couple of times.
They simply dropped it out of the song.
I agree with JMD1961 it was much better when they redubbed the vocal.

Digging this one up...
Has anybody ever heard a censored/radio version of "I Write Sins" that does not have the last note truncated? The album (uncensored) version ends with a long note that completely fades. My copy of the radio (censored) version ends mid-note before it completely fades. I may have gotten it from a copy of the "Only Hits" CD but I don't recall.
I checked out a video of the censored version on youtube and there it seems to do the same thing (in fact, the youtube version seems to end even a hair sooner than the version on my iPod):
I Write Sins Not Tragedies (Clean)
I also note that the album version starts with a "chime" overdub that does not exist on the censored version. Never noticed that before.

All copies of the "clean" version of this song that edit out the language are lossy. I can buy two CD's that are imports (one UK and one from Canada) but not sure if either will have better source. Anyone know of a source that is clean and lossless? The album version is lossless, so its unclear why they couldn't just make the edit lossless in the first place...

It's now been at least 13 years since "I Write Sins..."
Though there's been some lineup changes and stylistic
shifts, Panic seems to have lasted a lot longer than they
let on. I will say their second album, "Pretty. Odd" is a
really well constructed work that made me appreciate them
a lot more.

The Radio Edit of Everclear's "AM Radio" also had "goddamn" censored via backmasking. The thought of censoring this word is odd to me, but then again, I'm not in the Bible Belt. (And at least here in the NY/NJ area, many Classic Rock stations play the unedited versions of Pink Floyd's "Money" and Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner".)
p.s. On iHeartRadio I just heard a version of Post Malone's "Circles" with the line "But it was just the sex though" edited out and replaced with part of his humming. It sounded so obvious and out of place.

Pretty common here in Oklahoma. I had never heard
Eagles' "Life In The Fast Lane" censored on the radio
until I moved here. Odd because the whole song is still
about drugs and sex but after the edit, thank goodness
its not blasphemous. ;)

Years ago, I caught a then Clear Channel Classic hits
stream in which the God in God damn was muted on "Life In
The Fast Lane. It was verified to be a custom edit.

When we train new radio folks, we train them not to say "God damn" on the air.
"God" by itself is fine. "Damn" by itself is fine.
But "God damn" seems to imply that's you're invoking the power of the almighty to damn someone or something. Apparently, the radio Gods think that's a bad thing.
So that's why you'll hear those two words, together, muted, bleeped, or otherwise edited out of songs.

Not to get religious on a non-religious board, but to use GD is
considered by religious people to be using God’s name in vain, which is
a very bad thing. It has nothing to do with the “radio gods” nor invoking
the power of God to damn something. To believers, it’s just as bad, if
not worse, than using the “f” word on the air.
