This was one of my favorite pop singles from 1988. It was produced and co-written by Gardner Cole, who struck gold in the late '80s with Times Two's "Strange But True", Madonna's "Open Your Heart", and Jody Watley's artistically brilliant but commercially unsuccessful "Most Of All".

As reported in Pat's book (1955-1996), the LP version on The Book Of Pride runs 4:12. While I don't have the Giant Steps CD, I assume that this is the version that fades in, has the big-sounding echoey drums, and has a horn-like-sounding solo at the bridge. I have (what I assume to be) the LP version on a Canadian compilation called Hit Wave (PolyTel Canada 836 085 2, 1989), which runs 4:09.

The commercial US 45 is the same as the LP version, running about 4:10, although it's difficult to measure because of the fade-in. This commercial 45 has an incorrect printed time of 3:40 and is labeled "Side A-S" with a matrix number of "A&M-AM-01226-A-S SP-1". The B-side is a non-album track called "Adrenalin" and it's labeled "Side B".

So if the commercial 45 matches the LP version, what's the big deal?

The version that got all the airplay, if I recall correctly, was a drastically remixed version that appeared only on the promo 45 and promo CD.

The promo 45 has a "Side A-S" that is completely identical to the commercial 45 and, therefore, the same as the LP version. The incorrect printed time is also 3:40, the actual running time is about 4:10, the matrix number is "A&M-AM-01226-A-S ES-1", the mix fades in and has the big echoey drums. The only difference in the text between "Side A-S" of the commercial 45 and "Side A-S" on the promo 45 is that the promo 45 has the words "Edited Version" printed below the title, even though there aren't any edits.

The other side of the promo 45 is labeled as "Side A", with the words '7" Edit (new bass)' under the title, with "remixed by" and "original version appears on" credits. It is indeed a radically different mix, with a cold start, relatively tiny drums, and a keyboard solo that sounds nothing at all like horns. It's got a printed time of 4:12 and an actual run time of 4:09. The matrix number is "AM-01226-A ES1".

I thought that was odd enough; where most 45s have "Side A"/"Side B", this commercial 45 has "Side A-S"/"Side B" and the promo 45 has "Side A-S"/"Side A". Don't recall seeing that type of notation before.

But then a few years back, I found the promo CD single, A&M CD 17597, which complicated matters even more. The promo CD has three tracks:

1. 7" edit: printed time of 3:45, actual run time of 3:47; is a simple edit of the "new bass" version with 48 beats removed from 3:22-3:48 beginning and ending on the word "the"; no remix credit given, even though clearly uses the same mix

2. 7" edit - new bass: printed time of 4:11, actual run time of 4:14; identical to "Side A" of promo 45; explicit remix credit given

3. 12" extended mix: printed time of 7:43, actual run time of 7:43; explicit remix credit given

Very confusing.

To summarize, the LP and commercial 45 versions are both identical and have the fade-in/big echoey drums mix.

The "hit" that got played on the radio, however (as I can best recall), was a remix labeled "new bass" that appeared on various promo items, with a run time of around 4:12 on track 2 of the promo CD single and on "Side A" of the promo 45, and with an edited ending and a run time of 3:45 on track 1 of the promo CD only.

I'm trying to figure out which of the remixes (3:45 or 4:12) was the "hit", why A&M chose to label the 45s the way they did, and why the remix was never commercially available.

Anyone with a real good memory?

It's possible that the hit remix was on the commercial 12" vinyl. I have a promo 12" (SP-12274) that includes it, but don't know if the track listing is the same as the commercial release.

Side A (SP-012274-A):
1) 12" Dance Mix (label time 7:45)
2) 7" Edit (new bass) (4:12)

Side B (SP-012274-B):
1) House Dub (7:27)
2) LP Version (4:12)

For what it's worth, the Canadian commercial 45, like the U.S. commercial 45, also identifies the A side as 'SIDE A-S' and gives a time of 3:40, but unlike the U.S. commercial 45, the Canadian commercial 45 actually runs 3:40. The label describes it only as 'edited version'.

Paul C - Interesting! Is the Canadian commercial 45 the LP mix (big echoey drums) or the remix (teeny tiny drums)?

The Canadian 45 has the "teeny tiny drums" compared to the US 45/LP version. It also does not fade in as the US 45/LP version does. The Canadian 45 has the music of the chorus before the first verse, but on the US 45/LP version the chorus is actually sung before the first verse.

It sounds like the Canadian 45 is Track 1 from the US promo CD single, which is an edit of the remix. Neat!

Guys, here is my stock 45/promo 45/promo CD single info for this:

-My commercial 45, which has no "notation" below the title, has a listed time of (3:40), and an actual time of (4:10), exactly as Pat currently has notated in the database.

-My promo 45 has a stated "Edited Version" on one side, but is exactly the same, listed (3:40); actual (4:10) version that appears on my commercial 45, which fades in. Why "Edited Version" was stated on this side of the promo 45 is perplexing to me, since the lone CD in the database for this runs (4:12)! However, the other side of my promo 45 has a stated "7" Edit (New Bass)", with a listed time of (4:12), but an actual time of (4:10).

-My promo CD single (CD 17597), as Ron has indicated earlier, does NOT include the commercial 45 version at all, as ANY of its three cuts; none fade in. Here are the datails:

1-7" Edit (listed 3:45; actual 3:44)
2-7" Edit - New Bass (listed 4:11; actual 4:10) (this is exactly the same version that's on one side of my promo 45)
3-12" Extended Mix (listed & actual 7:43)

I'm hoping that this more concise explanation could perhaps assist Pat in adding some of these new promo 45/CD single details into the database. To my knowledge, and as Pat currently indicates, the original "Book Of Pride" CD is the only CD I'm aware of that includes the commercial 45 version.

Is it safe to assume that the Canadian 45
Version Is the same as Track 1 on the US
Promo CD Single?
