We got in two promo CD singles for this: (CSK 2874) has the following:
1-"Beefy Mix" (listed 3:45; actual 3:54)
2-Non-described version (listed 3:52; actual 3:50)
The second promo CD single (CSK 2913) only has one track, which was the non-described, listed (3:52); actual (3:50) version. Dare I ask: Where's the beef? (sorry).

Pat has graciously recorded Jim's promo CD single info for Michael Bolton's "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" into the database. I thought I'd also add that the actual commercial 45 run time is 3:51. (Timing info courtesy of abagon. The printed record label time is 3:50.)

I actually liked this song since it was before the crazy over exposure he received in the early '90s.
I remember two versions of this song. One had your typical fade ending while the other ended suddenly with an acapella "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay"
Was one version a single version and the other was the album?

The vinyl single had the fade ending. The only CD appearance of the song I have is from Greatest Hits 1985-1995, which has the acapella ending. I don't know if this is the LP version.
I also have a vague recollection of the sax solos being different on the LP and 45 versions of "Georgia On My Mind".

Does the fade on the vinyl 45 take place at a point before where the acapella occurs?

To answer my own question, no, the fade can't be done correctly.
Found a copy of the video for the song, in stereo, on Yahoo. Pasted the end from the video onto the acapella version. The file runs about 3:54.

In the database, the notes next to the song make it sound like there are four mixes all available on promo CD copies; however, I've only been able to find the "CHR Mix" and "Urban Mix" on promo 45s. Is this the case, or is there a third promo CD single with those mixes?

I was just able to hear the 2-track promo CD, and the non-described version appears to be the album version, as it has the acapella ending. Does anyone know if the "Beefy Mix" is the same as the commercial 45? This one has the fade out ending and is a slightly different mix than the non-described version.
One difference that is easy to spot is that there is a guitar overdub on the non-described (LP?) version that starts just before the first verse. This guitar is absent on the "Beefy Mix." The percussion on the "Beefy Mix" also has quite a bit of reverb, whereas the other version is fairly dry.

Just got in a commercial 45 since I couldn't track down a promo CD single. Listed time is 3:50, actual is 3:53. Has the fade ending and is mixed differently than the LP version. Deadwax is ZSS 177525 - DMMM- 1A.

John just sent me a dub of his commercial 45, and it can be concluded that the "Beefy Mix" is not the same as the commercial 45. The stock 45 has even more reverb on the percussion. Another difference I noticed right away is that the guitar solo is further back in the mix on the stock 45.
So, it looks like we have the following versions documented so far:
- LP version - same as non-described version on 2-track promo CD, which I assume is also on the 1-track promo CD (has acappella cold ending)
- Beefy Mix (has fade ending)
- stock 45 version (has fade ending)
It is to be determined if the CHR Mix matches any of the above or if it is also a unique mix. So far, the LP version is the superior version, in my opinion. The other ones just have way too much reverb on the percussion.

I have a vinyl promo of this with the beefy mix on one side and a non-described mix on the other. I don't have any other copy to compare it to...is the non-described side of the vinyl promo the LP (as on the promo CD) or the commercial 45 version?

Hykker, I'm hoping you can answer that for us. The easy way to tell is simply to listen to the ending. If it ends cold with the acappella line, it's the LP version.

Well, it appears that the undescribed version on the promo 45 is the same as the commercial single with the fade ending (I didn't listen for mix differences). Deadwax is as eriejwg described it, except mine has only 2 M's after the D.

Given this new information, I wonder if that 1-track non-described version (which appears to have been released 2nd given its higher catalog number) is also the commercial 45 version with faded ending. Jim, if you happen to still have the disc pulled from an earlier query, would you mind checking?

my promo cd single issued as columbia csk 2913 contains one non described version (listed run time 3:50; actual 3:51) but does contain the below comments
"produced by jonathan cain for cain street productions; mixed and edited by john luongo for 'the office inc'; remix engineer: gary hellman; taken from the columbia lp 'the hunger' 40473"

Jim & Ed, thanks for confirming. So, we can now safely conclude the following:
1-track promo CD contains the commercial 45 version
2-track promo contains the "Beefy Mix" and album version
The only thing left to uncover is if the "CHR Mix" matches any of the stock or promo CD mixes.
