I'm not sure I would have ever paid any attention to this one if it hadn't been for Jim. He recently e-mailed me the details of his Beastie Boys promo for "Hey Ladies." I also happen to own this promo, which has a 3:52 version of the song---five seconds longer than the vinyl 45 and LP version.

When I bought the promo CD, it was for the non-LP track "Dis Yourself In '89," so I never bothered to play "Hey Ladies" from this CD. I can now confirm that the version contained on it matches my 12" EP called Love American Style. Essentially, they added in an extra "Hey ladies / get funky" section right in the middle of the first verse. That's the only difference, but it's interesting to note.

Commercial 45 copies of the Beastie Boys' "Hey Ladies" indeed have an actual and printed run time of 3:47, as Aaron alluded to in his post. (Timing info courtesy of abagon.)

Aaron:

Do you know if "Hey Ladies" on the promo CD single can be edited to match the 45 and LP version?

Todd, I've never actually tried this. I'll have to check if they spliced in the audio or if it sounds like they went back to the multi-track to mix it in. Either way, it seems to me like this version would have been created after the LP version was done. Like I said, it's inserted mid-verse, and they don't repeat the entire "chorus" just that one line and cowbell sample. More cowbell, anyone?

OK, I listened to my promo CD, and the inserted audio is done in a way that would make it impossible to exactly re-create the LP version by editing it out. One beat of the LP version would be missing. By the way, the extra section was not pulled from another part of the song; it is unique in that there is an extra drum sample behind it.

Just curious, Todd, what was your logic for wanting to know this info?
