Although not in the database, this song peaked at #34 in Billboard in 3/75. My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:08), but has an actual time of (3:12). The version on my "In My Lifetime" box set, however, runs (3:45), so an edit/fade was obviously done here, to achieve the shorter 45 version.

This comes as interesting news, Jim, because "I've Been This Way Before" quickly became one of my favorite Neil Diamond songs when I was first introduced to it years ago while listening to an old Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown show a friend burned on CD-R for me. On this particular countdown, however, Casey played the full 3:45 version found on the In My Lifetime box set, so I'm somewhat surprised to learn of this shorter 45 run time. I'd be interested to find out if the 45 is an edit and/or an early fade of the CD (and LP?) version.

The 45 is an edit of the LP version. It's kind of clunky sounding, starting at the 1:14 mark and cutting to one measure (three beats) before the drums kick in.

So it's safe to assume the 45 edit has yet to show up on CD
right?
