The song "Goodbye, I Love You" by Firefall has a mastering problem on Greatest Hits. Starting at about 0:46 during the first chorus, the tape starts squealing.
Do other CDs also have this problem?
Does anyone know what this is caused from? When I was a kid, I accidentally dropped my Journey cassette tape in the pool. Even after letting it thoroughly dry out, from that day forward, it had a horrid squealing sound. The Firefall song isn't dreadful by any means, but it makes me wonder if the mastering engineer might have also accidentally dropped it in the pool. ;)

Aaron:
Just listened to this song digitally. The song goes south at :46 in on:
Elan
Greatest Hits
You Are The Woman & Other Hits
It's not as bad as the above, but somewhat an issue on:
The Essentials: Firefall
Even though this song isn't in my active library, if I were looking for this song, I'd go with The Essentials version.

Revisiting this track, does anyone know the edit points to recreate the 3:23 'short DJ 45' version?

Since no one answered this part I'll speculate...in the mid (ish) 70s tape manufacturers started using a different binder for the oxide. It did not stand up well & oxide would shed and gum up the tape guides. Layers on the reels themselves would often stick to one another as well. This seemed to affect most, if not all manufacturers. In many cases baking the reels can give you a couple of plays, maybe these masters were too far gone. To me it's inexcusable to use something like this on a CD. Even a needle drop would have been preferable if that was the only clean source available.
