I have the commercial 45 for "Rush, Rush", purple-label Virgin 7-98828, 1991. It's got:
      A: 7" - printed 4:19, actual 4:16
      B: Dub Mix - printed 5:56

The A-side of the 45 can be edited down from the LP version, which runs 4:53 and is readily available on
  • Hot Hits Vol. 6 (1991)
  • Now That's What I Call Music 20 (Virgin EMI PolyGram UK CDNOW 20, 1991)
Here are instructions, based on my timings for Hot Hits:

Keep the first hit-hat cymbal from 0:00.0-0:00.7.
Edit on the first beat.
Remove the 8 beats from 0:00.7-0:06.0.
Keep the 181 beats from 0:06.0-2:06.7.
Edit on the snare in the middle of the word "lover".
Remove the 32 beats from 2:06.7-2:28.0.
Keep the 203 beats from 2:28.0-4:43.4.
Note that this is already well into the LP version fade-out, which starts in the same place but is about 10 seconds longer.
Put a 32-beat fade from 4:22.0-4:43.4.

Your mixdown will run 4:16.7, with edits at 0:00.7 and 2:01.4, with a 32-beat fade from 3:55.4-4:16.7.

I have two files in my collection and they both run 4:16. The one from TM Century GoldDisc 903N is the common single version I remember.   The other file is labeled Hot Hits Vol. 6 but I detect mix
differences which sounds to me like a cymbal crash over the introduction.   Is the LP version a different mix or do two single versions exist?

Looks like Ron posted above that Hot Hits Vol 6 has the LP version.
The cymbal crash was edited out of the single version (see Ron's
editing instructions). He doesn't say anything about it being a different
mix.

I have this on cassette single and it has the 7" version and is available in her
greatest hits CD too.

So you can come close by you can't exactly cut the LP version to make the single version because of the intro. Or at least that's how I'm hearing it.

Ron says that the first edit removes 0:00.7 to 0:06.0. I assume the
cymbal crash you're hearing is right after the edit point at 0:00.7.

Dave forwarded the files to me to listen to, and I now hear what he means. It's true that you cannot create the 7" version by editing the LP version. There is a drum machine sound on the eight beat of every measure; this sound has a lot of reverb that overlaps the first beat of the next measure. On the 7" version, the first drum beat and keyboard note starts clean without the reverb being carried over from the drum machine sound. I did not listen for any further mix differences, but this is a good catch by Dave! Nice ears!

The 45 version appears on several CDs per the database. Is that not true?

Yes, the proper 45 version is on a few CDs.
