I noticed a designation of "LP version" in Pat's book, so I set out to figure out what the single version would be and if it can be edited down from the LP version.
Long story short: In addition to being a over a minute shorter than the LP version, the single is a "remix" and can't be edited down from the LP version.
I have the "Remix" (printed 4:11) on the B-side of the commercial 45 for "Get The Funk Out" (red-label A&M 75021 1552 7). It's labeled as "More Than Words - Remix", with a credit of "Remixed and Additional Recording by Nuno Bettencourt and Bob St. John". There's quite a bit more vocal harmony added, and it's most obvious at the 2:19 break that leads into the two bumps on the guitar - there are harmonies on the "remix", but just the bare guitar on the LP version.
Fortunately, the "remix" appears on the CD Sounds Of The '90s - 1991 (Time-Life R614-02, 2001, run 4:09), with very nice sound to match.
All the other compilations I own that include "More Than Words" use the LP version, which runs 5:33. For mastering sticklers like myself, I'll list what I know; these all sound quite nice, and I didn't hear any real difference in sound quality among any of these:- PGD Presents Great Sounds Sound Savers Classic Rock No. 6 (1995; most likely is digitally identical to Pornograffitti, but don't have that CD)
- Hot Hits Vol. 5 (1991; digitally exactly 0.333 dB louder than PGD...)
- Mega Hits (PolyTel Canada 845 609-2, 1991; digitally exactly 0.6 dB quieter than PGD...)
- Body Talk - Forever Love (Time-Life R834-22, 2001)
- Now & Forever - Timeless Wedding Songs (Rhino R2 75610, 1999; digitally exactly 0.5 dB quieter than Body Talk)
- Schwartz Brothers Compact Disc Sampler Vol. 7 (1991)

The remix also contains additional percussion by the legendary Paulina Dacosta (hope I spelled his name correctly).

Hi Steve,
The correct spelling is 'Paulinho Da Costa'.
People, please keep in mind that most CHR/Top-40 stations played the second cut on the promo Cd labeled "More Than Words - Remix" with a time of 3:43, remixed by Brian Malouf, & having a different ending than the 4:11 remix!! (Cut #1 is the 4:11 version.)

Andy, I just noticed that this valuable promo CD info has not been incorporated into the database. To summarize, the single version that runs 4:11 does not have ANY percussion. The "Remix" has the percussion (basically just some shakers) and runs 3:43.

2-More Than Words - Remix (L 3:43; A 3:42)

Another important detail here regarding Extreme's "More Than Words"... The cassette single release contains the same two tracks that appear on Jim's promo CD single:
1) More Than Words - 4:09 (printed time: 4:11)
2) More Than Words - Remix - 3:42 (printed time: 3:43)
Interestingly, the shorter 3:42 remix version that most Top 40 stations played has yet to appear on a commercial CD release!
