Pat, the stereo LP version is missing some background vocals found on the mono, which I presume to be the 45 however I've never listened to can not confirm.

The Buddah Singles Volume 2 disc has the 45 version.
Its from vinyl and yes it does have the background vocals you speak of.
The disc is out of print, but available for a decent price at amazon.
Other Buddah singles like "Simon Says" has background vocals that are missing from the stereo mix.
"Special Delivery" one of last 1910 Fruitgum Company chart singles has a totally different vocal on the single than the common stereo mix.
