Not sure if there was ever a U.S. Promo edit, or if the 45 version was shorter than the LP, but got in a UK Promo 45 for this song today. Listed is 3:49, actual is 3:53.

To recreate the promo from the LP, there were 4 edits.

I used to have a promo. There was a long version on one side and a short version on the other. I do not remember if the longer version was the LP version.

Hi folks,

The 45 edit was approximately described in the REO
Speedwagon edits thread but I decided to post the
detailed instructions here for any future editors.
There are 4 edits and each time instruction assumes
you made the edits in order.

1) Cut 1:38 to 2:19. This edit is on the down-beat
between the lines
"if you're tired of the same old story"
[edit]
"oh baby turn some pages"

2) Cut 2:57 - 3:18 ... this shortens the organ break
but this edit is in-between the 2 beats. At 2:57 it's
on the organ note immediately after the snare hit and
at 3:18 it's on the same organ note and is also the
start of the drum-roll that leads into the guitar
break.

3) Cut 3:00 - 3:21. Note this edit is only 2.7 seconds
after the previous edit. The above drum-roll goes into
the guitar break but cut on the down-beat that starts
the guitar break. The break now starts on the higher
pitched guitar part.

4) Cut 3:35 - 3:56. This edit is also between the
beat. Goes like this after the guitar break:
"keep on rolling, keep on rolling, oooohhhhhh"
"keep on rolling, keep on rolling"
[edit]
"ooooooh" ...into the cold end. The splice is right
on the electric fuzzy guitar note between the 2 beats.

There ya have it. Your edit will run 3:53.

Here is a guide to check your edits:

I do not have the promo 45 but there is a "short version" that has a listed time of (2:50). Good tune that should have done better on the charts back in 1978.

Yes Santi the (2:50) is the short side of the promo.
From what I read in the other thread it takes the above
stock 45 edit and chops out the music break but I don't
know the exact edit point.
If I ever get a reference dub I'll add to the above
post.
It should have charted higher, yes, but it became such a
classic rock staple that it didn't need chart success
after all.

I had recreated the DJ short edit a few years ago and
didn't take notes but just went back and retraced the
edit. Once you create the 45 version, remove 2:32.953-
3:34.261 and you'll have the short edit which runs 2:52.
