does anyone know where i might be able to find any of the songs listed below in the original 45 version on cd
laura branigan--power of love (edited vers) (4:44)
carmen, eric-hungry eyes (3:49)..the 1st 3:17 of the 45 is the same as the cd but the remaining 0:30 or so is different

elton john-candle in the wind (studio vers;not live vers;ie 45 vers) -- Okay this IS the live version, but the 45 had the applause filtered out. It's on the UK 4-track maxi CD single of Candle in the Wind from 1988. It's not that hard to find.
streisand/johnson-till i loved you - Was released commercially as a two-track CD-3 single in the US, same version as the 45/cassette single. Alternately, I believe there was a promo CD single issued in the US, and the single edit is on that as well.

edtop40 brings up some really difficult questions in his post. For example, my commercial copy of "Hysteria" by Def Leppard is a 5:49 version, while edtop40 is looking for a 3:49 version and Joel Whitburn lists his single as having a running time of 3:02 so there may be several different pressings of the 45 version of this song. Anyone out there have any version other than the 5:49 version?
Now comes a good one, "A Nightmare On My Street". The vinyl LP that contained this hit was titled "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" and on that vinyl LP, A Nightmare runs 6:08. On the cd of the same name, Nightmare runs 4:54 and is not just an early fade of the vinyl LP version in fact when I compare my dj 45 of Nightmare to the version found on the cd of "He's The DJ" I find them identical. This same version appears on many cd's, Rhino 71777, Rhino 71778, Jive 1091, Rhino 72481, K-Tel 4259, Razor & Tie 89051 and BMG Special Products 47676. Another remixed version appears on a couple of cd's listed in the Top 40 Music On CD book like Jive 41640, BMG Special Products 45636, Columbia 87076 and Collectables 9461. Now just because my dj single matches 7 cd's listed above doesn't mean that the commercial single is the same version and I have no idea where the remix version comes from (must be a 12" single that I do not have).
If anyone has additional information to share it would be appreciated.

dear moderator.....thx for the help......just so you know...if you listen to your 45 of def leppards hysteria the actual run time is 3:49 not 5:49 as it states on the label's face......my 45 copy also says the running time is 5:49 but it is actually 3:49.....you might want to confirm this.....edtop40

okay.....i just listen to my commercial 45 of "a nightmare on my street" jive #1124 and i compared it to the cd version on jazzey jeff & fresh prince's greatest hits cd from 1999.......the first 0:11 of the 45 has no bells/piano chimes while the cd versions has chimes right from the start.....the two are different all the way thru.....the running times are the same but the 2 versions are very different....the 45 face says the version is the single version.....the greatest hits cd says its the single version too, but they are very different.......any info would be welcomed.....edtop40

This is exactly what I am saying - my dj 45 does not match the cd version (Greatest Hits - Jive 41640) but it does match the cd's that I listed in a previous post like Rhino 71777 Dr. Demento Presents....so the statment on the cd must be wrong unless there were 2 different versions of this 45 pressed which is entirely possible. The version you are referring to that has bells on the intro is what I am currently calling a remix in the 11th edition of Top 40 Music On CD.
As for Hysteria, the matrix number stamped into the runout groove is 870-004-7-2-59183-CBS1

Here's some info on Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's "Nightmare On My Street."
When the album "He's The DJ..." was first issued, the LP and cassette copies were the only ones that had the true "LP Version" of the song. CD copies contain the "Single Version," probably due to the fact that the album is too long to fit on the disc. (There's at least one other track that was shortened, too, most likely for timing purposes.)
The version on the "Greatest Hits" compilation is actually an edit of the original LP Version. The true "Single Version" has different lyrics than the LP Version, but it is available on CD copies of "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper." I verified this version with my original cassette single and the 45.

Aaronk are you suggesting that there are two different versions of the vinyl LP "He's The Dj..."? My vinyl LP with matrix number A3 1091-1-JA has the introductory notes the same as the 45 and this is not the same as the introductory notes on the "Greatest Hits" cd.

Hello Moderator (if this is Pat, it's Bud Buschardt's friend who pointed out the Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" single version).
I'm not saying that there are two different versions of the vinyl LP for "He's The DJ..." But I own this album on vinyl, cassette, and CD. And I own the "Greatest Hits" CD. And I own the 45 and cassette single for "Nightmare On My Street." Here's the breakdown for "Nightmare" on each format:
Vinyl LP contains the LP Version
Cassette contains the LP Version
CD contains the Single Version (same as 45 and cassette single)
"Greatest Hits" CD contains an edit of the LP Version
I'm suggesting that CD copies of the album had to be trimmed in length to make the album fit on the disc. One of the ways they saved time was to put the Single Version of "Nightmare" on the CD (as well as single/edited versions of other tracks). Here's the songs that have different run times on the LP compared to the CD:
"Nightmare On My Street" 6:08 vs. 4:54
"As We Go" 6:00 vs. 5:33
"Parents Just Don't Understand" 5:35 vs. 5:12
"Another Special Announcement" 2:12 vs. not on CD
"DJ On The Wheels" 3:36 vs. 2:42
"He's The DJ I'm The Rapper" 6:10 vs. 4:55
"Hip Hop Dancer's Theme" 3:48 vs. 2:54
"Jazzy's In The House" 4:10 vs. 3:00
"Human Video Game" 5:40 vs. 4:12
BOTTOM LINE: The version of "Nightmare" on the "He's The DJ..." CD is the Single Version with different lyrics than the ones found on LP and cassette copies of "He's The DJ..." The version found on "Greatest Hits" has the original lyrics, but it's edited in length; it is NOT the single version as the insert card indicates.

dear moderator.........i'm just reviewing my def leppard 45's versus the cd versions and i noticed your comment about the etching on the inside of the face of the 45 for the song "hysteria"..........mine says the same as yours except it says "edit" after all the numbers..........i never noticed that before..........so i must have a special edit version of the 45 even tough the face of the 45 says "lp version"..........i must find another copy of this 45 to continue my review...........thx for the heads up...........are you sure your 45 runs 4:47 in length?????????????.............the 4:47 version must be out there on cd

AaronK - yes this is Pat and you will soon see why I inquired if there were two different vinyl pressings of "He's The dj...". The version of "Nightmare On My Street" as found on the "Greatest Hits" cd is not an edit from my vinyl LP of "He's The DJ...". The introduction of "Nightmare On My Street" on the "Greatest Hits" cd is definitely remixed from both the 45 and my vinyl LP "He's The DJ...". So perhaps there are two different pressings of the "Greatest Hits" cd floating around?

Pat, I listened to my vinyl LP of "He's The DJ..." (1091-1-JA), and compared it to my copy of the Greatest Hits CD (01241-41640-2). The intros are exactly the same, except on the Greatest Hits, the first 11 seconds of the vinyl LP Version are cut off. So, if I cued my LP in 11 seconds and played them together, they would be exactly the same.
Also, on my Greatest Hits CD, the lyrics of the song match the LP Version lyrics. For example, at 1:18 the lyrics are "...buggin' / cold havin' a ball / and somethin' bout Elm Street was the movie we saw." On the single version, those lyrics are changed to "We saw Elm Street and man it was def / and everything seemed alright when we left" and it cuts out the complete part of him rapping about the movie.
Another difference between the LP and Single Version lyrics -- (at 2:04 on my Greatest Hits CD) "I wanted something cool to quench my thirst / I thought to myself 'yo this heat is the worst' / but when I got downstairs I noticed something was wrong / I was home all alone but the TV was on." These lyrics are the same as the vinyl LP Version. The Single Version lyrics are "I went downstairs to grab some juice or a Coke / flipped the TV off and then I almost choked."
The only difference between my copy on Greatest Hits and the LP Version are the lengths. On the Greatest Hits, some of the music is chopped off and the song starts to fade as soon as you can hear Freddie on the phone laughing. The fade ends with "Jeff, answer me, Jeff..." Then it rolls to the next track. Do you have a different version on your Greatest Hits CD? I can tell you this much, I bought the CD when it was first released, so I'm sure I have one of the first pressings. They may have tried to correct the version of the song on future pressings.
Let me know what you find.

OK I will agree with you on the first :11 of the LP version being edited off plus some of the ending of the vinyl LP to create the "Greatest Hits" version which is misrepresented on the tray card as the "single version".

I think this was probably the very first thread I ever contributed to! The reason I'm digging it back up is because I just found a 1988 German import CD of He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper that contains the original, full-length LP versions of all the songs, including "Nightmare On My Street." The disc might be long out of print in this configuration, but the catalog number of mine is Jive 8.26826.
The trade off is that the last two songs are completely missing (Jazzy's In The House and Human Video Game). For other pressings, they shortened many of the songs and eliminated "Another Special Announcement." Anyhow, I was happy to find most of the album in its original unedited form. This was the first rap album I ever bought.
