ROD STEWART - "Passion"

The actual 45 running time is (5:35), the listed time is "5:29" on the record label.(Warner WBS49617)

The indicated time on the db of 4 CDs are "5:29" and "5:30".

Hmmm - In Canada, we had a stock 45 that was the radio edit of Pasiion - though I only heard it broadcast on two stations in Canada; CKOC and CFTR.

It reduced the opening piano intro to two measures, and straight into the vocal (about :07 seconds), and faded it off at "Even the President needs Passion - Everyone I know needs some Passion".

Cheers,
Jody

Just to revive this thread - the strange Scorpions edit got me thinking of it - did you folks have an edit like this in the US? (Check last post)

There definitely is a short version on the US promo 45 that runs close to 4 1/2 minutes. For sure, it shortens the intro. I can't remember where the fade point is.

I have a 12" promo single with a longer version (7+ min) on one side & the 5:29 version on the other. The long version just continues the chorus after the shorter one fades. I don't know if this was the album version or not.

Hmmm...FWIW, this must be another case of two different Canadian pressings. I have a Canadian copy of this single and it runs 5:29.

So what accounts for the six-second difference in the US commercial 45 version? Does the 45 run slower or just run longer?

My LP's running time is (5:29), the 45 is longer than the LP. The 45 has more two Rod's "Passion" shouts from 5:30 to 5:35. Although the "Foolish Behaviour" LP which I have is the Japan pressing. Since both the actual running time of the entry album CD on the db and my LP are (5:29). I believe the Japan LP is the same as the U.S. LP.

Wow - I'm surprised by that. I only have a 45 with the album version on a "Back to Back Hits" reissue (let's face it Abagon - add the few seconds, your 45 is basically the album version). And even Torcan, who is on my side of the 49th parallel, remembers a stock 45 like yours.

My 45-rpm disc edits from :06 to the vocal post, and then fades where I decribed it in the post above. I am surprised that the US stores did not get that edit in 1981.

I'm surprised they bothered with an edit of that song...even the short version is still a pretty long song. The edit on the intro is very clunky sounding. I don't remember hearing the short version during the song's chart run, though a station I worked at in '83/84 did play it as gold (not realizing it was the edit, I stepped on the vocal big time first time I played it).

Hmmmm - It never sounded that clunky to me. Stereo Rock (I'm always bringing TM up...lol), did an interesting custom edit where they deleted :19 to the post. So the intro was half as long. And then they edited the final refrain to one run instead of two.

But I can imagine how cheesed you would have been walking the post on a surprise edit if you weren't ready for it...lol. That's funny.

I obtained the US pressing "Foolish Behavior" LP (Warner HS 3485)
The actual LP running time is (5:29). Therefore, the 45 length is (5:35), and the LP length is (5:29)

<SOAPBOX>Normally, there's no need to editorialize, but 7+
minutes of "Passion"? Ouch.</SOAPBOX> There, I've said my
piece.

I love...um...12"s of Passion. Actually, I think this is another case where this isn't a fabricated 12" mix, but the actual recording that was then edited down for the album...

The promo 45 was an edit of the LP/commercial 45 version.

Using the timings from Storyteller (1989), here are the editing instructions to recreate the promo 45 edit.

Segment 1:
Extends from 0:00 to 0:06.0 on both LP and promo 45 edit.
This segment ends slightly before a downbeat.

Remove the 40 beats from 0:06.02 to 0:29.2 of the LP version.

Segment 2:
Extends from 0:29.2 to 5:09.6 of the LP version.
Extends from 0:06.0 to 4:45.2 of the promo 45 edit.
This segment ends on a downbeat at the start of the word "passion".

Add a 32-beat fade at the end of segment 2.
The fade extends from 4:49.8 to 5:09.6 of the LP version.
The fade extends from 4:26.6 to 4:45.2 of the promo 45 edit.

Your mixdown will run 4:45.2, with an edit at 0:06.0 and a 32-beat fade from 4:26.6 to 4:45.2.

after looking at the lyrics for the rod stewart song
'passion', and comparing the vinyl 45 to it....here's
what i've come up with......the 5:29 lp version
cuts/dumps the fade out by 0:06.....the ending versus of
the lp version are

Can't live without passion, even the president needs
passion
Everybody I know needs some passion
Some people die and kill for passion
Nobody admits they need passion
Some people are scared, passion, yeah passion

Never get it, never

while the vinyl 45 runs 0:06 longer and contains lyrics
no found on the LP version....

the vinyl 45 ending is....

Can't live without passion, even the president needs
passion
Everybody I know needs some passion
Some people die and kill for passion
Nobody admits they need passion
Some people are scared, passion, yeah passion

Never get it, never get enough of your passion
Yeah, yeah, yeah, passion

so the vinyl 45 cannot be re-created from the lp because
of the missing lyrics during the fade out
