I noticed in my copy of the book that "Opposites Attract" is listed as the LP version on the CD Rock The First. Although I no longer own this CD, I'm quite certain that the version on that disc is the "Street Mix," which is a longer version of what's on the 45.
Curiously, I also have this song on my TM Century library, and it's the same remix that's on the 45 and "Street Mix," but it does not have the rap in it. This one runs (4:32). Would this be something that was only on the promo single?

I pulled out my 12" of the track, and I just figured out that the version on my TM disc is actually the "Magnetic Mix." It has an actual run time of (4:33), although the label states (4:53). The "Magnetic Mix" is essentially the "Street Mix" with no rap.

I just tracked the original Paula Abdul cd "Forever Your Girl" which contains "Opposites Attract" with the Rock The First Volume 3 cd mentioned above and the two are identical.

The true 45 version, labelled as '7" version' on the A-side of the US 45, is found on the UK CD Now That's What I Call Music 17 (Virgin EMI Polygram CD NOW 17, 1990). The printed time on the 45 is 3:45 and it runs 3:45.
Most of the other compilations out there use the LP version, which runs about 4:24.
I don't know what versions were on the promo CD single, but the 45 has a short male rap before the first verse.

Ron, here is my promo CD single info. Details can easily be matched up with earlier posts in this thread. FYI, we played Cut 2 at our station back in 1990:
Paula Abdul-"Opposites Attract" (PRCD 3106)
1-(Derrick Rap Edit) (listed & actual 3:45)
2-(Radio Edit) (listed 3:38; actual 3:37)

Does anyone know if the commercial 45 version, which crapfromthepast reports is labeled as '7" Version' and has an actual and printed run time of 3:45, is the same as the "Derrick Rap Edit" appearing on the promo CD single?

I don't have the promo CD single, but there is the description of "Rap by Derrick Delite" on the commercial 45's record label.
Please see the scan of the "OPPOSITES ATTRACT" record label.

Yes, it is. I have a Canadian various artists promo from 1990 that also calls it "Derrick Rap Edit," so I think that's the official name of the 45 version. That CD also has the Radio Edit, which is the same mix without the rap, so it has the same two versions as Jim's.

Thanks, Brian!
I also thought I'd pass along one more thing... At the moment, the database states the following comment for "Opposites Attract":
(dj copies of this cd single run (3:45) the "Derrick rap edit" and (3:37) the "radio edit")
According to my good friend Ed, the commercial cassette single has a run time of 3:45. Pat, to help lessen confusion, you might also want to note in the database that the "Derrick Rap Edit" on the promo CD single is the same as the commercial single verson.

I have the promo CD single (PRCD 2695), which has three cuts:
1) 7" - 3:45 (listed)
2) street - 4:25 (listed)
3) magnetic - 4:01 (listed)
I haven't listened to it in ages, and have never done "actual times" (I wouldn't know what db qualifies as silence in order to calculate it), but I can send any of these for inspection, if that will help.
Nowhere on the disc is Derrick Delight mentioned, but I'm certain his rap is on the first two tracks of this single. However, I recall him being named as The Wild Pair, and having a brief attempt at a solo career on Paula Abdul's offshoot record label, administered by Virgin (to which she was signed as an artist). It's kinda hard to establish yourself as an artist when your first appearance in a music video is as a cartoon cat. ...Unless you want to be that for your entire career.

Jim, do you know if the radio edit has ever been commercially released, or if it can be cut together from the various versions available?
I just loaded up the "Derrick Rap Edit" and had a hard time hearing where you could cut in the opening to drop the rap... I'm suspecting they just dropped his track or something similar...

First off, Gene, sorry I apparently overlooked your 1/2012 question to me.
Personally, I stopped buying/collecting commercial copies at the end of
1989, coinciding with the end of reliably-released 45RPM singles. So I
don't know the answer, as this song came out in 1990, and I had the
version I wanted on the promo CD single. Ed may have its cassette single
details....
Aaron briefly touched on parts of his 12" single earlier in the thread. I only
own a stock 12" single (Virgin 0-96528), and here are the particulars:
A Side:
1-(Street Mix) (listed 4:28)
2-(12" Mix) (listed 5:40)
3-(Dub Version) (listed 6:25)
B Side:
1-Magnetic Mix (listed 4:53)
2-Club Mix (listed 6:01)
3-Party Dub (listed 3:09)
Pat currently has 2 (6:47) "remixed" versions in his db. While both are
likely the "Shut Up And Dance" Dance Remixes CD version, I thought it
might still be useful to also list the 6 versions found on my 12".
