I just acquired a copy of the DJ 45 for Peter Gabriel's "Big Time," and I have to report that the label is completely wrong. According to the label (and my 8th Edition of T40MOCD), the DJ edit runs (3:12); however, I timed it out, and it really runs (3:56). There are no edits in the song whatsoever--it runs about .5% faster than the album version, and it is simply an early fade. The other interesting thing is that the label says "Intro: 31" to indicate to DJs how much time there is to talk over the beginning; however, this song starts cold with "Hi there" just like the LP version.
Also, I have an import single of the song that lists the (4:24) version as the "Seven Inch Version." Was there a difference in the mix between the LP and 45? I'm thinking they might have printed that on there because the single also includes the "extended version" and they needed to give the (4:24) version a name.
Pat, you might want to change the note in your book to read "DJ copies stated a run time of (3:12) but actually ran (3:56)."

Aaron, or anyone,
Can you provide the start and ending fade points to recreate the 3:56 DJ 45?

I have this promo. The fade starts at around 3:44 (during "my car's getting bigger" and my copy goes to zero at 3:57.

Aaron - The so-called 7" Version on the UK CD single is identical to the album version, other than a very minor EQ difference at the top end. They even play at exactly the same speed, so must share the same digital source.
It seems there is no special single version, other than the US promo edit.

I’ll never understand the reason for these DJ Promo songs with early fades.
IMHO, it ruins the song. Never have I ever heard early fades on the radio.
Anyways, 2 songs immediately come to my mind. “Patience” Guns N’ Roses
and especially “I’ll Be There For You” Bon Jovi. For those that don’t know,
they cut the last minute of it. I’m sure we could do a topic on this, if it hasn’t
been done already.

There was a stock 45-rpm disc of Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart, where on the second repeat of the final chorus, the song fades, somewhere between 3:30 and 3:43

The promo 45 of Tiny Dancer from Elton John fades at around
3:32. Some have said they thought it would have sounded
better if they had edited down the song vs. fading it.
Nowadays, all you hear on the radio is the full 6 minute +
version.
