I have the LP version (runs about 5:07) on Columbia's Emotions (1992) and the jukebox CD Spotlight On Hits Pop Vol. 5, which is digitally exactly 1.6 dB quieter than Emotions.
I have the edit (runs 4:04) on Top Hits USA RH12 (so-so sound) and on the jukebox CD Hot Hits Pop Vol. 12. These are not the most common CDs out there, so I figured out the edit points. For your editing pleasure...
Here are instructions for creating the "edit" from Emotions:
Keep just shy of the first 8 beats of the song, from 0:00.0-0:04.5.
Edit on the tiny drum beat just before the full downbeat.
Remove the 32 beats from 0:04.5-0:22.3.
Keep the 203 beats (plus the tiny portion at the beginning of this block) from 0:22.3-2:15.4.
Edit on snare.
Remove the 32 beats from 2:15.4-2:33.2.
Keep just shy of 181 beats from 2:33.2-4:13.8. The edit is after the syllable "hap" in the word "happen", right where the instruments come back in.
Remove the 16 beats from 4:13.8-4:22.7.
Keep the 29 beats (plus the tiny portion at the beginning of this block) from 4:22.7-4:39.0.
Edit on snare.
Remove the 32 beats from 4:39.0-4:56.8.
Keep 4:56.8-5:07.9 (end).
Your mixdown will run 4:05.6 (with outro silence), with edits at 0:04.5, 1:57.6, 3:38.2 and 3:54.5.
