According to abagon, the actual and printed commercial 45 run time of Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" is 4:07. The reason I note this is because database CD appearances of this song sporting a "45 version" comment run 4:07-4:13.

It might also be worth mentioning that if you're looking for the "extended version" on CD, just pick up one of the album versions...

I just wasted about 20 minutes carefully comparing the 12" to the album version only to find NO differences! (Maybe a slight speed pitch difference...)

On the other hand, the Rapacious Mix was released the same year, in 1988, & truly is a unique remix.

I think it may have been available on CD (maybe import) at one point but don't know if it is now.

Todd or Ron (Crap), was there a U.S. Promo CD for "Don't Be Cruel"?   Discogs doesn't list one, but surely there was one?

All of the singles following Don't Be Cruel saw US promo CD5 releases, but I've never seen any indication that it had one. Promo CDs were still a bit hit-and-miss in the summer of '88.

I also don't have a promo CD for "Don't Be Cruel," and I've never found one. I have promo CDs for all the other hits from that album, though.

No U.S. promo CD single for "Don't Be Cruel" is listed in Gregory Cooper's 1998 book, Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide 2, either - and it's quite thorough (up through '98, anyway)...

However, it DOES list two commercial 3" CD singles for the song, both imports: One from the U.K. (MCA DMCA-1310); the other from Japan (MCA 10P3-6037). Sorry, but the book doesn't give the contents of either...

To Brian W:

HitDiscs issued in that period oftentimes were vinyl dubs!

Now I'm not saying that "Don't Be Cruel" was a vinyl dub, because I don't have that particular HitDisc.

TM Century in the early days of HitDisc would transfer the radio version of a cut from the best available source they received; whether CD promo, DJ 45, or promo 12-inch of the radio edit.

It's not HitDisc, anyway, it's Hitmakers, which was apparently a magazine also. They would issue samples every four weeks, it looks like. "Top 40 CD Sampler, Volume 8, July 8, 1988." It's definitely not a vinyl dub on this disc. It runs an actual 4:07.

Andrew is correct about the sources for HitDisc. They did use vinyl for
many of their sources.

Hitmakers is interesting, though, because I have never detected vinyl
sources for any of their early discs, yet they issued quite a few songs
that I've never seen on promo cd single. They must have had label
connections that provided them with DAT copies.

I have the rapacious edit. I could swear this was played on the radio here in NY in the 80s and 90s. Anyone else confirm?

It was played when they did mix specials but I don't
remember it as a current or alternate.
