Just heard the 2:52 DJ edit for "Magic Man." From what I can gather, it's just an early fade of the 5:27 album track. Fade time is from 2:41-2:52.

There are any number of Heart songs where the promo edit was just an early fade of the commercial single. Others include "Crazy On You", "Barracuda" & "Straight On".
"Heartless" was an edit".

But "Crazy On You" is a slightly different case, in that the stock 45 was an edit of the LP version (much of the opening is stripped off--and used on the 45 version of "Dreamboat Annie"). At least on "Barracuda" and "Straight On" the 45 and LP were the same.

"Dreamboat Annie" was released twice, first as the B side of "Crazy On You", and was the same as the album version. It was re-issued as their 3rd single, this time with the additional guitar riff at the beginning. Not often where the single version is longer than the album. I'm guessing they did this to stretch it since it is a rather short song.

Actually, I documented in another thread that the mono version of "Barracuda," although faded earlier, has a couple overdubs that are not present on the stereo version. The mix is also unique and not just a fold down.

But the single version is an actual edit, right? Some years ago, I received an MP3 of "Magic Man" which was labeled as "45 version" and it contained several edits.

But I have noticed on the "American Top 40" replays on XM, whenever this song comes up, it's always the early fade, so I guess Casey played the DJ edit.

Looking at Pat's database, seemingly the stock 45 and the LP version are the same (and the promo 45 is the fade).

The database currently shows DJ and commercial 45 info for Heart's "Magic Man" as follows:

(dj copies of this 45 ran (2:45) and (5:35); commercial copies were all (5:35); actual time is (5:27) not (5:35) as the dj and commercial record labels stated)

If I may make a suggestion, this could probably be more clearly re-stated as something like:

(dj copies of this 45 ran (2:45) and (5:27), not (5:35) as stated on the record label; commercial copies were all (5:27), not (5:35) as stated on the record label.

john's file...the db needs to be updated...

I recreated that file so long ago that I don't remember
the source. I think it was a vinyl dub.

The guitar part called "Silver Wheels" is actually part
of the song "Dreamboat Annie". It was never supposed to
be part of "Crazy On You".

If you take the actual single "Dreamboat Annie", you will
see that they just added the main part of the song to it.

Since it was cleverly attached to "Crazy On You" for the
1980 Greatest hits album, everyone thinks it's supposed
to be part of "Crazy On You"now.

To "The Hits Man":

I just checked my US Mushroom vinyl LP, and of course you're right, the timing of that acoustic guitar interlude is attributed to "Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child)" on the label (not "Crazy On You").

However, "Silver Wheels" is a different acoustic guitar interlude on their 'Bebe le Strange' album.

My copy of the "Magic Man" "mono AM play" side runs an actual 2:53. Listed label time is 2:45.

I don't agree. While Andy's right in that the guitar interlude on the LP is attributed to the preceding "Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child)" track, you can't graft just
the acoustic guitar outro to the shorter "Dreamboat Annie" track and create the "Dreamboat Annie" single (there are waves underneath at the end and the very end of the
guitar is just ever-so-slightly different).

It is my contention that the acoustic guitar part at the end of "Fantasy Child" is in fact part of the LP version of "Crazy On You" (even if the label doesn't say so)
and was edited out for the stock single and promo edits, and it's why every "LP version" of "Crazy On You" has that acoustic intro.

   I don't remember where I
read it, but that guitar was never part of "Crazy On

Nancy Wilson disagrees with your assertion, Grant.

Quote:
In the studio, Nancy strummed the acoustic rhythm part that anchors “Crazy on You” on a Guild Jumbo whose particularly high action made it
“hellish to play.” To play the song’s quasi-classical instrumental opening section, she used a thumbpick in conjunction with her fingers. “Because
that first part was a solo pieces [sic], I had to get the whole thing down in one take,” says Nancy. “I didn’t want to do a punch-in because it
would have been obvious. So by the time I got it right all the way through I had blisters all over my fingers. It felt like they were going to fall
off!”

Over in another courtroom, Pat has updated the run time
in the database for the DJ edit of Magic Man.

Nope! I'm sure she meant that she didn't want to comp
the guitar piece.

No, she didn't, Grant.

Further proof--here's a "Midnight Special" performance of the song from 3/4/77--well before that Greatest Hits LP came out. Check out what opens the song.

You can be as sure as you want about this, but you'll be wrong every time.
