In Pat's listing for this song, he lists two discs, but does not list
the soundtrack CD for Jerry Maguire (Sony 67910). I don't own this CD,
but Bruce's song is listed. Does this CD have the proper '97 single version?

Was there more than one version, other than the Jerry Maguire mix?

We played a version with some movie dialog added for a couple weeks during the song's chart run. I don't remember where we got it, but it might have been from the label rep on a CD-R. I doubt it was actually produced by CBS records though. Is this the alternate mix you're thinking of?

Steve: That's the 'Jerry Maguire' mix that you're describing.

Several years ago, I posted the following information regarding Bruce Springsteen's "Secret Garden" in the "'DJ Edit' Additions..." thread:
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - SECRET GARDEN
Comments: When "Secret Garden" was first released in 1995, the LP version was featured on all DJ and commercial single copies. The single was pretty much a chart flop [it peaked at #63 on Billboard]. Two years later, a disc jockey at radio station KKRZ-FM in Portland created a new version of "Secret Garden" by adding bits of dialog from the movie Jerry Maguire throughout the song. This mix was circulated to other radio stations across the country and ultimately became a big Top 40 radio success. It's not clear if this "Jerry Maguire Mix" ever became an official radio promo release, but it does appear on my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio subscription series (run time is 4:26). The "Jerry Maguire Mix" has never been made commercially available on CD.

Doesn't that beg the question, if there is no commercially available version
of the Jerry Maguire mix, is it really the 45 version? If the Jerry Maguire mix
was only given to radio stations, doesn't the LP version count as the official
45 version, as it was made available for sale as a CD single to the public
both in '95 and '97? I checked Billboard Online, and for the song's run on
various charts in '97 they initially list the CD single number 77847, although
to be fair, on several others listings for the song, there is no catalog number
at all.

Paul:
The Jerry Maguire mix was never issued on a commercial single release so technically, no, it can't really be classified as a "45 version" in the traditional sense. However, the Jerry Maguire mix was definitely the version Top 40 radio jumped on in 1997 and this no doubt propelled the song up the charts. I also seem to recall Springsteen's record label did not issue additional quantities of the 1995 CD single to retail outlets when the Jerry Maguire mix became a bigger hit in 1997, so I don't think it would be accurate to classify the LP version released in 1995 as the 45 version either, especially when it more or less bombed on its own during its original release.

I guess I'm just thinking that no matter what version was getting played in
'97, the only version available to the music-buying public was the LP
version. It's disheartening to think that I can't (legally) purchase the 45
version. (I bet if anyone has one of those DJ versions, they would be mucho
expensivo to get).

I just found a website that has a history of the song
(www.SpringsteenLyrics.com) It is on a CD release, The Morning Zoo
Bootleg - Z-100, of which only 8000 copies were made.

Any update on whether the "Jerry Maguire" mix - played on 100's of stations in
1997 - has been made available in any form?

Yes, you can find the Z100 Morning Show Bootleg CD on Amazon and
eBay for reasonable prices. I don't own this disc, but I believe it's the
only release for the Jerry Maguire Mix, other than CD-Rs that were
passed around to radio.

I have a "Movie Dialogue Edited" on a TM Century GoldDisc 282N and a "KKRZ Jerry Maguire Mix" on a Promo Only - Mainstream Radio [1997-03] disc for what it's worth.

Do you have the actual GoldDisc in front of you or just the file? I'm 99% sure I have HitDisc 192A where it is labeled "Movie Diaglog Edited." I have this file on my hard drive from the TM disc, and it matches the KKRZ mix on the Promo Only Mainstream disc. Are the two you have different mixes with different dialog?

They're files, Aaron! I have the scan of the insert and I must have mislabeled the file. It's actually the [Movie Dialogue Edited] on GoldDisc 282N. The
"I was just about to tell you" is spoken at :06. Actual time is 4:28
The file from Promo Only - Mainstream Radio [1997-03] labeled as [KKRZ Jerry Maguire Mix] has the same spoken part at :01 and the actual time is 4:23

Yes, I should've stated that the TM version matches the promo CD-R
and is also the same mix as the Promo Only Mainstream CD, but the
latter edits off the instrumental intro. That's the only difference between
the two.
