Back in 2004, I posted some promo CD single info regarding Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery" in the "'DJ Edit Additions..." thread, but it never got incorporated into the database:

(Arista ASCD-3382)
1) Clean Version - 4:07
2) Album Version - 4:07

The Clean Version edits out the f-word at the 2:20 mark (and I never realized how dark and morbid this song really is until I read the lyrics). It's my understanding that commercial single releases contain the LP Version, but unfortunately I no longer have a commercial single to verify the run time. Can anyone help out here? (Ed?)

I also don't know which CDs, if any, in the database contain the Clean Version, so this will need to be sorted out as well.

The commercial CD single (Arista 13395) is the LP version, actual time 4:07,
with the f-bomb.

Hi

Not to clog the subject matter with unsolicited trivia, but Todd mentioned the dark subject matter - she does have a talent for making dark songs into hits. The lyrics to her earlier song (and later radio hit) "Possession" were taken from letters she received from a stalker. Really gives you chills once you know that. [shiver].

My friend Tom shows a 2nd promo CD single for this song, and here are the particulars. (Please keep in mind that I don't own this one myself, and if additional info is desired, I'll have to e-mail/have Tom look into it for us, so only ask if you're highly curious.) Thanks.

Sarah McLachlan-"Building A Mystery" (ASCD-3390)
1-Single Version (listed time 4:06)

I was able to borrow the above-referenced promo CD single from my friend Tom for analysis. The actual time is (4:05), and the "f-bomb" IS included on this promo CD single. It doesn't really jump out at you, and she doesn't sing the word all that loudly, but it is definitely there. Because it was a bit subtle, I'll bet that there were quite a few stations that would've played this version on-air in 1997 (although we didn't at our station), by either A) Not noticing it, or, B) Not being overly concerned about the "bad word".
