my commercial 45 issued as warner 29746 lists a run time as 3:08 and indeed does run that length....i only mention this because i found the proper 45 version on the back trax cd single issued as warner 2-468.......i didn't see this mentioned in the expansive "prince" thread....does anyone else have this cd single??.....mine has a glitch at the 1:03 mark of the song "little red corvette".....i was wondering if they're all like this??

I have it but I'm not home now so I can't check it. I'm actually posting this from my hotel room in Vegas on the Amazon Kindle my sister got me for Christmas. (And it's a huge pain in the ass to type out a message, but I thought I'd try it.) I don't recall hearing a glitch though. (What is wrong with me? Who sits there posting messages about 45 versions at 11:00 pm when they're vacationing in Vegas?)

Yes, mine has the glitch, too, Ed, though in my audio editor it's at 1:00, not 1:03, on the word "gonna."

Can the 45 be recreated from the lp version?
Has anyone else found the 45 version on another CD without the glitch?

Yes, it's basically just an early fade of the LP version.
My Back Trax CD single has the glitch too. Back Trax is also slightly faster than the LP version and the 45 mix I had on a TM Century Golddisc.
I also have the 45, but will have to get back to you on the actual time.

So there was never an edit of the Trojan line in the first verse was there? I must've heard a custom edit of that one. The edit point started at :30, and the pick up point was at "But it was Saturday Night"...

The (U.S.) 45 does contain the "Trojans" line.
Assuming the long version on the promo copy is the same as the album cut, I'm pretty sure there is an edit about 2/3 of the way thru the song in the part where he sort of squeals. I'll have to double-check.

Well, I actually don't have the 45 for Little Red Corvette. Sorry about that.
All of my copies contain the Trojan line too.

Nope, no edits. I can confirm that the US stock 45 and short side of the promo are the same. The song starts at the same spot as the Hits version (no fade in segue like on the LP), and it simply fades early.
The long side of the promo is labeled as "dance mix," but it's not. It's just the LP version faded about 30 seconds early.
There may, however, be another promo that I'm not aware of.

Back when it came out, I can remember exchanging my Back Trax CD for another because of the distortion on that track. LOL. I didn't notice the glitch mentioned above and later learned the distortion was supposed to be there.

WINK-FM in Fort Myers played that edit. So either it was a custom edit done by one station and passed around, or several stations had the same idea.

And were they a TM Century Stereo Rock Automation affiliate? That's where I heard it in 1983 (WBEN-FM - Rock 102 Buffalo, NY). It was on the LP version though; no other edits or early fades.

This was back in 1983 when the song was charting... WINK was a non-automated CHR. Unfortunately I can't recall if they played the full LP version or the 45 fade, just that they cut that line out.

Silly me - I meant 1983...lol. I'll correct my post.

Just curious about this as I am trying to re-create the 45. Is it just an early fade or is there something else I am missing. The database lists all appearances on CD as LP version and not LP length?
Thanks.

I am aware of just an early fade at about 2:55 where Prince shouts "Right down to the Ground ... Honey You've Got to Slow Down". My memory serves me that the fade starts on the word "down to the ground", but I don't know how many seconds the exact fadeout is.
In earlier posts, I was apparently incorrect about the "Trojan" line, so this is the only other editing I am aware of.

You know, I never noticed that. I had to turn it up to hear it.

Side-A-1 "1999" tune on the US vinyl LP "1999" tracks over the next selection Side-A-2 "Little Red Corvette." Therefore, this tune has the designation of "version."
My Japan pressing CD "The Hits 2" doesn't contain the mixed part of "1999" and "Little Red Corvette".
The vocal starts at 0:15.4 on the US commercial 45 and the "Hits 2" CD. Actually, it's possible to create the 45 version from the vinyl LP "1999" or "The Hits 2" CD.

Sorry.....but I am still a little confused.... I used the version of "Little Red Corvette" found on the US version of Prince's "The Hits/The B-Sides" and I faded it to match the 45.
Do I now have the correct 45 version/length?
Thanks everyone.

Yes, that's correct. The reason it is labeled "version" in the database is
because you would technically have to edit off the opening drum beats
in addition to fading early when using the 1999 album version. The
Hits/B-Sides copy has already edited off the opening beats, so you
only have to make the early fade.
