my commercial 45 issued as warner 29174 states a run time on the label as 4:02 but actually runs 4:04 and is just an early fade of the full length cd/lp version.....this 45 run time info should be added to the db....

Can someone shed some light on how these versions are edited since they are different from the standard early fade U.S. Version:

12" (UK)

    * A. "Purple Rain" (long version) – 7:05
    * B1. "God (Love Theme from Purple Rain)" (instrumental) – 7:54
    * B2. "God" (vocal) – 3:59

7" promo (UK)

    * A. "Purple Rain" (radio edit) – 4:19
    * B. "Purple Rain" (long radio edit) – 5:37

I have the UK 12" of "Purple Rain," which I purchased because it's the
only place where the instrumental of "God" was released. I doubt I ever
played "Purple Rain" from this 12"; I just assumed it was the full LP
version.

I'll try to pull it out and make a dub when I get a chance.

Yes this 12" is shorter. The UK 7" has two listed different edits from the US 7".

I'll let you know ASAP if the actual time matches the printed time of the
12".

My copy times out to 7:03 and is an early fade of the LP version. The fade starts at 6:45 and ends just before Prince starts "hooooo-ing" at 7:03.

Thanks Aaron...now to find out about those 7" edits...probably just additional early fades.

Here in Minneapolis, WLOL played a version of Purple Rain that faded out around the 6:15 mark. WLOL started charting the song about a month ahead of its Hot 100 debut, so I suppose there was no 7" edit at the time. As far as I can remember they always stuck with the longer version. Did any other stations around the country play the long version during its chart run?

KELI in Tulsa played the long version on Friday and Saturday nights, but I don't know if that really "counts" because they played the 12" mixes of the hits every Friday and Saturday night(7pm - midnight, as I remember).

The rest of the week, they played the edits (including, in this case, the 7" edit of "Purple Rain").

Actually, I'm not aware of them playing the 12" of "Purple Rain;" what they played on Friday and Saturday nights was the full album version.

Q-107 in Washington, D.C. played a custom mix which took the complete 45 version (up to about 3:45, right up to the word "rain") and tagged on the ending finale (starting about 5:11) of the LP version. They pretty much got the meat & bones of the song, sounded pretty good.

I believe I have this Q107 edit and I agree, it does
sound good. To recreate, cut 3:50 through 5:15 on the
downbeat then fade 6:57 through 7:07. Final length ends
up being 5:42.

Oh yes... edits of this.

The one the oldies station here plays is very similar to
one I heard when I lived in NY. I can't tell the exact
time because I always hear it in the car. It sounds like
it's more or less the single length, but then edits to the
finale/cold end. Must be a smooth edit because I can
never tell quite where it is.

I was wondering if such an edit was ever serviced (like
from TM Century) or are these stations just playing a
custom edit fed to them by the parent conglomerate?

I took a cross country road trip in Sept. '84 and remember
hearing the album version on a few stations (though I don't
recall which ones anymore).
I was doing a weekend shift on Q-106 in Claremont, N.H.
(maybe it was still WECM then) that
summer and we'd play the album version at night.

I have "Purple Rain" on TM's GoldDisc 132 (the first issue with red
font), and the disc has both the single length and full album version.
The single length on this disc runs longer than the actual 45 by about
10 seconds, but they corrected this error on the GoldDisc3 issue (black
font), where it runs about 4:04.
